Rockets prevail in two big Region 4 contests

Rockets roll past Raiders

New Rockford-Sheyenne was in control of the game from the start as the locals defeated Lakota by a final score of 74-42 in District 7 boys basketball action played at Lakota, on Friday, Jan. 30. A bucket by Hunter Thompson tied the game at 4-4 with 6:36 to go in the first. One of two free throws by Nathan Holzwarth capped off a 15-0 run putting the locals up 19-6 with 3:17 to go. Two free throws by Evan Ulrich, with 1:18 left gave the locals a 25-10 lead and that was the score after one stanza. The Rockets increased their lead to 49-20 at the intermission, 70-34 after three, and again defeated Lakota by a final score of 74-42. Lakota is a young team and never quit. They could have a good future.

Most of the Rockets saw playing time and seven scored, and everyone contributed. Jackson Neidlinger paced Lakota with 17 points. New Rockford-Sheyenne had good balance. Ulrich led the way with a game-high 23 points. Hunter Thompson had 14 points. Johnny Grann had 12 and Bo Belquist added 10. The Rockets improve to 3-1 in District 7 and 8-3 overall.

Rockets edge Cardinals 

New Rockford-Sheyenne had a 20 point lead at one time, but Langdon-Area -Edmore-Munich fought back and cut the lead to 6. The Rockets held them off in the fourth quarter and defeated the Cardinals, by a final score of 54-39 in non-district boys basketball action played here before a good crowd on Saturday, Feb. 1. The Cardinals are one of the top teams in District 8 and Region 4. It was very much of a hard-fought physical game. The Rockets led 15-5 after one stanza, 26-13 at halftime, the visitors cut the lead to 39-33 after three, and again the locals came away with a 54-39 win against a very good team. Jackson Delvo paced the visitors with 17 points.

Evan Ulrich and Nick Berglund each had 13 points to lead the locals. L-A-E-M made 14 field goals, 6-10 free throws and committed 14 fouls. NR-S made 20 field goals, 10-14 free throws and committed 14 fouls.
