February 10, 2020

Air Force ROTC Cadet Benjamin Makay.

Benjamin Makay, NR-S graduate and Cadet in the NDSU Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program, recently received an Aviation Flight Scholarship to pursue his Private Pilot License at a local flight school. This scholarship program, known as the "You Can Fly" initiative, and is designed to reward and incentivize Cadets throughout the Air Force ROTC enterprise to gain aviation experience and further refine their airmanship to advance them in their training as an Air Force Officer.

"Cadet Makay competed nationally for this unique and highly coveted scholarship," said Captain Rinke, an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies at NDSU who reached out to the Transcript with this story. He goes on to say, "Cadet Makay's dedication to his academics, physical fitness, and his drive within the Cadet Wing made him very competitive for this opportunity; one that will afford him the opportunity to pursue his private pilot's license and sharpen his aviation skills."

The Air Force continues to focus on recruiting and retaining pilots throughout their ranks. The Air Force ROTC Detachment 610 at NDSU/UND, which is only one of two split detachments in the nation, is also placing an emphasis on pilot recruitment. "Our goal is to interest the qualified, and find where their needs and goals intersect with what the Air Force has to offer. In Cadet Makay's case, I think we go it right".

Makay will begin his flight training immediately, as he hopes to build his airmanship and flight hours leading into the summer. "This was the best news I've received all school year! I'm looking forward to getting started and thankful for the opportunity," said Makay, who is the son of Gerri and Ben Makay.

Detachment 610's reach spans across the entire state of North Dakota and parts of Western Minnesota. They have campus locations at the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University with options to join the program while attending many neighboring universities.
