Archival Anecdotes: A Valentine for Frankie

February 10, 2020

This handwritten valentine is certainly one of a kind. Written in 1890, it pre-dates any trending valentine fad. This year, why not take the time and write out something special with pen and paper for the person you love.

A Valentine for Frankie

Love is a wonderful thing isn't it?

They say it knows no bounds, and perhaps that is true. On Feb 14, 1890, Frank Thompson recieved a thoughtfully penned valentine that now resides in the Eddy County Museum.

It reads:

As the grass grows round the stump

I choose you for my sugar lump.

As the grapes hang on the vine

I choose you for my valentine.

And just who signed their name to this work of poetry?

"Papa."

This one of a kind heart felt valentine was donated to the Eddy County Museum by Clara Olson.
