History of New Rockford: Jan. 27, 2020

On the evening of Dec. 26, 1902, the A.F. & A.M. (Masons) Lodge and the Eastern Star Lodge installed their officers.

For the Masons, Installing Officer Rev. J.R. Beebe installed W.E. Biggs, Worthy Master; J.E. Bennett, Senior Warden; E.S. Severtson, Junior Warden; D. Niven, Treasurer; W.C. Hayes, Secretary; W.E. Radtke, Senior Deacon; George M. Pike, Junior Deacon; D.Y. Stanton, Senior Steward, A.G. Gardner, Junior Steward; and J.W. Rager, Tyler.

Installing Officer Mrs. James E. Hyde installed the following for the Eastern Star: Minnie E. Bennett, Worthy Matron; W.E. Biggs, Worthy Patron; Viola E. Woodward, Associate Patron; Margaret E. Morris, Secretary; Jennie Brownell, Treasurer; Lizzie M. Biggs, Conductress; and Grace M. Mulvey, Associate Conductress. Officers appointed were Phoebe (Mrs. R.R.) Woodward, Ada; Alice M. Rager, Ruth; Amanda J. Radtke, Esther; Laura J. Mitchell, Martha; Mary O. Baird, Electra; Pearl Severtson, Warder; W.C. Hayes, Sentinel; Mary C. Stoddard, Chaplain; Anna M. Beebe, Marshall; and Jennie Brownell, Organist.

After the ceremonies W.E. and Lizzie Biggs hosted a social session, complete with ice cream, wafers and coffee. The Biggses gave those present “pretty souvenirs” they had made.

On Dec. 27, J.D. Carroll was in from Lake Washington for a week’s stay in town. Miss Amanda Nolting of Austin, Minn., arrived to visit her sister Mrs. B.W. Hersey and family. Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Allison arrived to visit his parents.

On Sunday, Dec. 28, Frank Bailey was in from southeast of New Rockford. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Campbell returned home after spending Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hawthorn on the Sheyenne River. On that day, Mrs. John G. Frankland died in her Los Angeles home; the Franklands were early pioneers in Eddy County. They had left for California in 1889.

On Dec. 29, the two barbershops merged into one; D.Y. Stanton moved his shop into the basement of the J.M. Patch Block in partnership with Lou Smith. New fixtures and barber supplies were added. Mr. and Mrs. George Brazee arrived from Kensal; he would have chair #3 in the Smith and Stanton Barber Shop. Charles Reutenik was in New Rockford visiting his father, the Rev. N. Reutenik of the German Reformed Church. Harry Campbell began teaching in the Foster schoolhouse after the resignation of Miss Frances Thomson. Henry B. Johnson was in from his farm southeast of town. Martin Anderson of Plainview was in town. P.C. Peterson came up from Barlow. H.H. Moen and Knut Eger were in from the Sheyenne Valley. Mrs. Burton Hulbert and Mrs. Axtle Johnson were in shopping. Rudolph Indergaard came in from southeast of town. County Superintendent of Schools Grace B. Putnam left for the NDEA Convention in Fargo. Ed Starks left for his old home Plainfield, Wisc., for New Year’s at a family reunion; it had been 14 years since he had visited Plainfield. Ole Johnson left for southern Minnesota and South Dakota, where he would visit friends and relatives. Attorney R.P. Allison went to Esmond on business. J.W. Perry left for his old home near St. Louis, Mo., for a visit. That evening the original Rube Allyn, impersonator, humorist, mimic, and dialect storyteller appeared in the Opera House; it was his fourth appearance in New Rockford in the previous ten years. Tickets were 15, 25, and 35 cents, available at the Central Drug Store. Rube played to “a small house.” Also that evening there was a “grand entertainment” at the Schwoebel School, Mrs. F.S. Atkinson, teacher, followed by a supper and dance. Tickets were $1, with the proceeds going toward an organ for the school.

On Dec. 30, Matt Wiltschko came in from his farm southwest of Barlow on business. Also up from Barlow for a visit of several days were Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Carroll and Katie (Mrs. Thomas) Turner and son Carroll. Jess College, Josiah Hoffman, and David Bailey were in town. J.A. McCrum and John Schaefer came in from Tiffany. Nils T. Hendrickson from west of Sheyenne and Michael O’Keefe from west of town were in on business. From 3 to 6:30 p.m., the Baptist Sunday School had a Christmas tree entertainment in the church.

On Dec. 30 to Jan. 1, the Haynes Palace Studio Car [photographs] was in New Rockford.

On Dec. 31, attorney Carl B. Craven was up from Carrington on legal business. Barlow druggist Otto Berger came up for New Year’s with friends. Went Mcgee was in from his Tiffany farm on business. Joe Dutee came in on business from eastern Eddy County. Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Dailey were in shopping. Rev. E.T. Quam came down from Sheyenne. Stephen Walsh came in from Morris on business. Otto Forey left for a visit to Fargo and places in Minnesota. That evening a large crowd attended the masquerade ball at the Opera House; at midnight George Brown of the Brown Hotel served a “fine supper.” There was also a large gathering at a “watch meeting” in the Congregational Church.
