2019 Year in Review: All the Feels

Here are some of the top local human interest stories reported in 2019

Canine Rescue

Early in January of 2019, we at the Transcript staff received a press release announcing the Community Credit Union’s donation to A Cause 4 Paws, a local animal rescue charity. We knew there was much more to be told about this organization. Transcript reporter Rachel Brazil spent a Saturday afternoon with founders Colette Byrum and Shelly Hanson and shared her experience with readers. The pair had rescued 200 dogs and likely have saved many more since.

The Golden Age of Eagles

On Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, the New Rockford Eagles Club celebrated its 70th anniversary. New Rockford Aerie 2923 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles held its initiation on Sunday, Dec. 12, 1948. Among the 117 men who attended that first meeting, four were present for the 70th anniversary. Charles Richter, William Starke, Theodore Allmaras and Arden Nygaard were all at the club to celebrate.

Arbor Day Celebration

Let’s face it, that windstorm from 2018 still leaves its mark on the community. While our parks, yards and neighborhoods might not ever look the same, we can say that we are a community of recovery and resiliency. On Wednesday, May 29, New Rockford hosted the North Dakota State Arbor Day event to celebrate the community’s recovery from the storm. In addition, the City of New Rockford was recognized with a Tree City USA award. At the close of the ceremony, officials and residents gathered to plant an Ohio buckeye tree in Centennial Park.

Working Hands

When John Scanson retired, he knew he wouldn’t enjoy sitting around “doing nothing.” Scanson combined his desire to keep busy with his natural affinity for kids and interest in woodworking, and the result has been pick-up loads of woodworking projects given away to elementary-age children. On the last day of school, Scanson delivered over 200 birdhouses to NR-S students.

Local woman opens animal sanctuary

Jessica Hawkes has a big heart for animals. So it may have been no surprise when she launched an online crowd-funding campaign to establish Hawkes Homestead Animal Sanctuary. Of the 126 animals residing at Hawkes Homestead during that time, nearly half had been acquired through surrender or rescue. Jess stresses that while there are many wonderful animal shelters for cats and dogs, there is a definite need for barnyard, special needs, and exotic animals who can no longer be cared for.
