'Tis the season to 'Shop with the Sheriff"

Funds needed for annual holiday outreach

The Eddy County Sheriff's Office is at it again. On Thursday, Dec. 12, deputies, highway patrol, and other law enforcement officers from around the area will be hosting the annual Shop with the Sheriff event. This program not only gives youngsters an "unique shopping experience" but also fosters positive relationships with law enforcement.

Here's how it works. After signing up, participants will report to the Eddy County Courthouse at the designated time. From there, kids climb into the back of a squad car and proceed down Central Avenue with full lights and sirens. Each officer will match up with two or three youth as they peruse the aisles of local stores with one key objective: buying holiday gifts.

Any child ages 5-15 is welcome to participate in this fun holiday tradition. It helps youth develop positive relationships with law enforcement, and also gives them the opportunity to practice budgeting skills and think of others. Event coordinator Bill Beals of the Eddy County Sheriff's Office says, "most kids spend more money on family and friends than they do on themselves. Usually grandmas are the ones who get spoiled with gifts."

Last year, each child received $75 to spend on gifts for friends and loved ones.

Before the night is over the police officers and the shoppers join volunteers to tackle quite the daunting task of wrapping each gift. It's a great opportunity to lend a pair of hands and get in on the Christmas cheer.

With the increasing popularity of the program, it is expected to draw an even larger crowd this year. Please consider donating to support this year's event. Please mail your donation to the Eddy County Sheriff's Office, 524 Central Ave
