In football, the thought has traditionally been that in torrential downpour conditions, a team's passing game would suffer the most.
But for New Rockford-Sheyenne, it was just a leisurely walk in the rain.
Quarterback Johnny Grann threw for 260 yards, completing 11 of his 13 attempts, and Bo Belquist had two touchdowns through the air and one on special teams to help the Rockets triumph over the North Border Eagles in a waterlogged Homecoming game Friday night, Sept. 20, by the score of 48-6.
The game got an early starting kickoff in advance of the encroaching storm that hit much of the state with flash floods, road washouts and inundated basements.
It didn't stop top-ranked NR-S from "pouring" it on in the first quarter against the Eagles. Belquist started the game with a five-yard scoring pass from Grann, followed by Hunter Thompson's 49-yard reception, a safety recorded by Kaden Jensen, another Belquist score and a 32-yard run from Nathan Holzwarth.
The Eagles got on the board in the second quarter with a 37-yard burst by Jayden Berg, but the Rockets answered right back via a big runback on the kickoff by Holzwarth covering 76 yards.
Thompson and Belquist added two more scores in the third quarter, the first coming on a 26-yard run and the second from a 63-yard punt return.
Belquist had a 109-yard effort on six catches, while Thompson hauled in three receptions for 90 yards through the air.
NR-S (4-0) hit the bus for a game at Lakota with the Nelson County Chargers this past Friday, and take on a possible Region 2 playoff contender this Friday night in Rolette when they tangle with the North Prairie Cougars starting at 7 p.m.
