Trap sports take flight at local shooting range

Five trap participants take turns shooting. When ready participants will call out "Pull." Note the other seated in the large chair- he is in charge of releasing the clay pigeons from the trap (the large box at the left side of the picture.) Each participant will shoot a total of 25 clay pigeons.

After many years of planning and preparation, the Eddy County Rod and Gun Club shooting range is now host to the sport of trap shooting. The trap season began on Wednesday, July 24 and a large crowd stood on the sidelines ready to shoot. Since then, an average of 30 men and women have arrived at the range each Wednesday, ready to hone their skills.

For those not familiar with the sport, trap is a shooting sport, specifically with the use of a shotgun (typically a 12 or 20 gauge). The idea is to shoot the clay pigeons (they look more like orange frisbees) as they are launched into the sky...
