Post 25 gets victory in latest rival contest

Big hits ruled the day in the latest chapter of the New Rockford- Carrington diamond rivalry, but, as it seems to go lately in the series, it was Post 25 who got the last salvo.

As he did in the Region 3 championship during the spring season in extra innings, Payton Smith hit the go-ahead double for Carrington in an eventual 8-6 defeat for the Black Sox at Jim Johnson Park which effectively gave visitors a straight path to the top overall seed in the upcoming District 4 Tourney.

In spite of a spectacular four-RBI showing from Tucker Longnecker with two home runs, including a solo shot to bring them within one at 6-5 in the seventh, Post 30 dropped their third loss of the season in league play.

Carrington, meanwhile, effectively put themselves in the driver’s seat for the top seed for District 4 with an 8-0 league record with several games in hand and just a few more to complete.

Alex Harrison, who splits time with the Legion and Babe Ruth programs for SNR, largely kept the Post 25 bats at bay with a competitive outing to keep he and his teammates in contention. He went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.

Longnecker’s first shot came in the bottom of the first, a two-run homer almost to straight-away center just on the left-center side.

After that, Post 25 starting pitcher Lucas Geiszler settled down somewhat, shutting out the ‘Sox for the next three innings until single runs in the fifth and sixth got New Rockford to a 6-4 deficit following Post 25’s two runs in the sixth.

With the tying run at third after Longnecker’s home run, reliever Seth Nelson, on for Geiszler to attempt the save, uncorked a wild pitch to send the game to extra innings.

Smith highlighted Carrington’s offense with three hits and four RBIs, and Post 25 got good production from the bottom of their lineup. Zach Johnson, hitting eighth, went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, and ninth hitter Tyson Lee was also 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Brandon Larson also added a double.

New Rockford leadoff batter Bo Belquist had two hits, an RBI and run scored. Nathan Holzwarth and Hunter Thompson had the other hits.

The second game ended up in a 4-4 tie. Teddy Allmaras had a double and two RBIs, as did Smith for Post 25.

Post 30 (6-3, 10-4 overall) has District 4 games remaining with Kidder County in Steele on July 15 for a 7/5 doubleheader, and then two league games at Washburn July 17.

The District 4 Tournament will be held in Carrington from July 22-26.
