Leaping into History

Just like his uncle, Alex, did 15 years to the day, NR-S junior Bo Belquist surpassed what even he may have thought possible.

Over two days of the State Track and Field Meet at the MDU Resources Community Bowl Friday and Saturday, May 24-25, Belquist, in addition to the two short sprints, aimed for glory in his best events, the long and triple jump.

He did more than that, capturing the state long jump crown on Friday with a 21' 8 3/4" effort, then obliterating his own school record in the triple jump Saturday by flying 45' 6 1/2".

The Friday victory for Belquist came by just one-quarter inch, edging out Beulah's runner-up, Johnnie Brown, and surpassing Grant County/Flasher's Connor Ottmar in third by just 2 1/4 inches.

It would take a Herculean effort on his final jump Saturday to leapfrog triple jump leader Michael Hall of Kindred, whose best effort was 44' 4 3/4" going into that attempt.

Along with the two titles, Belquist achieved top-10 times in both the 100 (11.47) and 200-meter dashes (23.24).

His 20 points represented all of the NR-S boys' scoring at the state meet, putting the Rockets in a 12th-place tie with Northern Lights.

Bo wasn't the only Belquist to make waves at the Bowl. Seventh grader Kelsie advanced to the finals in both the 300-meter hurdles, where she ran a career-best 47.78 to take seventh, and the 400-meter dash, where her time of 1:00.34 was sixth.

The Rocket boys were also represented by the 4x400-meter relay team which placed 20th overall. Team members were Billy Fleming, Johnny Grann, Nick Berglund and Parker Granger.

Hannah Haley had the 11th-fastest time for NR-S in the girls' 100 hurdles (17.28), and Haley and Belquist teamed up with Brianna Price and Elizabeth Widmer to just finish out of the points in the 4x400 in 4:14.48, taking ninth.

Kelsie Belquist finish ed 10th overall in the girls' triple jump, flying 33'3".
