Golf team grows in number and skill

The 2019 NR-S golf season started in March with three girls and 10 boys in the gym hitting golf balls into nets and pitching balls in small nets. This went on for about three weeks before they were able to go outside and get some practice in on the driving range. Most of April's weather proved to be disastrous again for golfers, but the team did participate in three meets at the end of the month.

One of those April meets was here at home. That’s right, for the first time in many years, New Rockford was able to host a varsity tournament on April 22. There were eight teams from Region 2 with a total of 44 golfers.

Once May hit, the team went at full tilt. Even though the cold weather was a challenge, the golfers competed in a total of eight meets for the boys, five for girls and three for the junior high boys, including another in New Rockford. Other locations included Fargo, Casselton, Enderlin, Carrington, Mapleton, Hillsboro and Mayville.

Some of the highlights of the year included Benjamin Schaefer’s sixth place finish at Oxbow, fourth place in Maple River, sixth place in Mayville and second place in Regionals.

Cole Johnson placed 10th at Enderlin and second in New Rockford in junior varsity meets.

Garret Schuster took 10th place at the junior varsity meet in New Rockford.

The team (and coach) learned a lot from participating in these meets both as competitors, and in learning the different aspects of the golf game. The golfers played in all types of environments, from rain to wind to cool weather. Some of the golfers had never participated in a meet before, so they were nervous but excited to play on the big stage. All in all it was a fun-filled spring of golf.
