Belquist qualifies for state at HWC Meet

One full week after competing in the Lloyd Invitational, the NR-S Rocket track squads found their way back to the Fessenden-Bowdon track complex for the HWC Invitational, held Tuesday afternoon, April 23.

Adding another event to his state meet schedule was junior Bo Belquist, as he captured the long jump title with a meet-record 21 feet, eight inch showing.

Belquist would also finish in the second spot in all three sprint events, just behind Surrey's Corey Fuchs for the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and Coy Spooner of Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis and Clark in the 400.

Additional boys' point scorers included Parker Granger in the 100 (fourth), along with Hunter Johnson in the discus (fifth) and shot put (eighth). NR-S would finish with 44 team points, good enough for seventh in the standings.

In the girls' meet, where NR-S took fourth with 60 points, the Rockets' individual event winner was Brianna Price. The junior crossed the tape first in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.74, and she also finished as the 200 runner-up to Rugby's Kristina Brossart, running a speedy 28.03 seconds.

Price would help bring home another event win by running the anchor leg of the 4x200-meter relay, teaming up with Hannah Haley, Kelsie Belquist and Elizabeth Widmer to run 1:56.11, nearly four-and-a-half seconds shy of automatic state qualification.

Third-place finishers went to Chloe Heinz in the 1,600-meter run, along with Belquist, who earned that spot in the 400 and sixth in the triple jump. Haley was another double placer in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles (fourth and sixth), as was Widmer (sixth, 800; seventh, triple jump).

Kayahna Hopfauf took seventh in the 800 for the Rocket girls.
