Rocket girls open track season in sixth place

It’s still a bit premature to declare conditions in the area out of Old Man Winter’s grasp, but the NR-S track and field program got their spring underway in climate-controlled conditions this past Saturday, March 23.

At the State Class B Indoor Meet at NDSU’s Shelly Ellig Complex in Fargo, the Rockets scored 33 team points in the girls’ race to finish in sixth place overall, while the boys earned nine for 18th place.

The highest individual finish for NR-S came from senior Elizabeth Widmer, who finished as the runner-up in the girls’ 800-meter run. Her time of 2:34.08 was just behind winner Drew Frolek of Milnor/Wyndmere/Lidgerwood by a little under 3.5 seconds.

Junior Hannah Haley placed third overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.23 seconds, improving on her preliminary heat time of 10.42 which was fifth-best.

For the sprint events, junior Brianna Price came home with third place in the 400-meter dash (1:06.03), and she took seventh in the 200 in 28.99.

Chloe Heinz, a sophomore, was the other NR-S girls’ competitor to place in multiple events. Heinz got points in both the one-mile (6:19.31) and two-mile (14:46.86) races, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, in those events.

In her first varsity track meet, Kelsie Belquist, just a seventh grader, finished just over a half second behind Price in the 400 with a 1:06.57 clocking for fourth. She also scored an eighth-place finish in the long jump, leaping 14’ 2 1/2”.

NR-S’ boys had three individual placements. Junior Bo Belquist ran a time of 54.48 to take fifth in the 400, and took eighth in both the 60-meter prelims and finals, his final time being 7.74 seconds.

Freshman Kaden Jensen finished in fifth in the triple jump with a 36’ 11 1/4” effort.
