Sheriff warns about scam

Eddy County Sheriff Paul Lies reported Tuesday that individuals within the community are receiving calls from others claiming to work for the Social Security Administration and reporting there is fraud on individual accounts. The number they are calling from has been “spoofed” to look like the call is coming from the Social Security Administration. Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Anyone receiving a call from this number should not provide them with any personal information. The Social Security Administration is aware of the scam and directs those who receive these calls to contact them directly, ironically, at the same number 800-772-1213 or your local office.
