Sermonette: April 2, 2018

“But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles would hear it. So I was delivered from the mouth of the lion. And the Lord will rescue me from every evil action and bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom. To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.” 2 Timothy 4:17-18 BSB

In context, this is a rather sad note because when Paul appeared for his hearing, no one stood up on his behalf. In fact, this was a dangerous time in Rome and standing up for Paul may have caused someone to lose their life. However, Paul does not hold this against anyone but rather celebrates the faithfulness of Christ in that moment.

Sometimes we find ourselves in places where it feels like he has deserted us. It is during these times, that we we must remember two things First, Jesus stands with us! We hold this promise close to our heart, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5). Trusting what God has called you to will be the very place his presence will dwell. Knowing his presence is certain gives us great boldness as we move forward in faith. Jesus stands beside you in this moment—you are not alone.

Second, whatever you face today does not have to be carried out in your own strength, but by the strength he provides. Our natural default is to rely on our own strength, abilities and experiences—which will get us only so far. Sometimes what lies before us requires something supernatural. It requires something greater than what we can provide—it requires his strength. Embrace the promise that God will strengthen you beyond what you are capable of doing in the flesh. Whatever comes your way today or tomorrow, remember he stands beside you and will strengthen you!
