  • Hwy. 281 property to hit real estate market, just not yet

    Amy Wobbema|Dec 28, 2020

The former Mill Pump property along U.S. Hwy. 281 is expected to go on the market, just not in the way commissioners envisioned at their Dec. 1 meeting. In a special meeting convened on Thursday, Dec. 17, State’s Attorney Ashley Lies explained that Chapter 11.27 of the North Dakota Century Code (Sale of property by county commissioners) did not apply to this property, as it had been obtained through delinquent taxes. Therefore, the commission cannot sell it at auction in January as planned. Rath...

  • Volunteers receive first vaccine doses: COVID-19 vaccine arrives in Eddy County

    Amy Wobbema|Dec 28, 2020

Georgia Johnson would much rather have a needle in her arm than a swab up her nose or in her throat. And it wasn't hard to come to that conclusion. As an employee of the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, she's been tested for COVID-19 a whopping 40 times since Gov. Burgum first ordered long term care staff and residents to receive routine virus tests this spring. It's also worthy of note that all 40 of those tests have been negative, no small feat given the spike in cases our county has seen...

But of course, you can’t live on pandemic sourdough alone. So here’s a quick list of the books, music, and bits of culture that provided some peace and tranquility amidst the frantic hours of work, moments of mourning, and surprising intervals of joy and extreme gratitude tha...

  • Viruses and responses differ. Human nature doesn't.

    Tom Purcell|Dec 28, 2020

The way my siblings and I responded to my family's chicken-pox outbreak in 1973 may shed light on Americans' responses to COVID-19 in 2020. I was about 10 and remember how differently my five sisters responded to that highly contagious bug. To prevent its spread, our family doctor ordered us to wash our hands regularly; keep all surfaces, devices and furnishings in the house extra-clean; and maintain our distance from infected siblings. "If you do come down with chicken pox," said the doctor, "d...

I have dealt with great things that I do not understand; things too wonderful for me, which I cannot know. I had heard of you by word of mouth, but now my eye has seen you. Therefore I disown what I have said, and repent in dust and ashes. Job 42:1-6 (NAB) In this passage from the Book of Job we see the words of a very humbled man. • We the People: The war power

    David Adler|Dec 28, 2020

The decision to go to war represents the most solemn decision any government will make, since it risks the blood, treasure and future of the nation. Those grave consequences, alone, are reason enough for Americans to understand how the Constitution governs the exercise of this awesome authority before they go marching off to war. The war power, John Quincy Adams observed, is “strictly constitutional.” The framers of the Constitution vested in Congress the sole and exclusive authority to initiate military hostilities, including full-blown, tot...

  • Archival Anecdotes: A year in the archives

    Rachel Brazil|Dec 28, 2020

Happy anniversary to Archival Anecdotes. It was one year ago that the Eddy County Museum launched this column.   I freely admit that the majority of Archival Anecdote features included images and artifacts from Eddy County's early days. This isn't because I am overly fond of the homesteading era or Edwardian fashion. It is because the museum has a host of collections dating from 1900-1920. This afforded many looks back to consider what life might have been like a century ago. It must have b...

  • Our Outdoors: Let There be Light

    Nick Simonson|Dec 28, 2020

Like so many other outdoor activities, ice fishing offers up some incredible opportunities at dawn and dusk and even late into the night for crappies, walleyes and other fish that forage in low light or even in times of complete darkness when a hot bite can materialize out of the depths. As a result, having the right lighting system both for the individual and for a shack will help make things easier to see during set-up and takedown, travel around a set of hot holes, and in those moments where...
