  • Am I finally appreciating the lessons of Christmas 1969?

    Danny Tyree|Dec 23, 2019

Most of my Christmases have become hopelessly blurred together, but Christmas 1969 holds a special place in my heart. In fact, back in 1998 my very first yuletide column took a whimsically nostalgic look at that holiday. But as the 50th anniversary of Christmas 1969 approaches, I feel compelled to write something with more gravitas. There were two main things I implored Santa for that year. One was a selection of toys from a yellowing 1927 Montgomery Ward catalog that my mother the collector...

  • Will impeachment hurt Trump in 2020? Here's the case for optimism

    Dick Polman|Dec 23, 2019

Most Americans, exhausted by Trump’s demagogic lying and relentless pillaging of the values we hold dear, are understandably skeptical that impeachment will cleanse the stench and quash the nightmare. Indeed, that day of reckoning won’t come any time soon. His fact-averse authoritarian enablers in the Republican Senate will likely rig his escape from accountability, and he’ll spend 2020 playing the victim and stoking his cult. But there can be a happy ending, if people have the will to make it so. The turnout backlash against Trump that power...

  • For the love of the dog

    Rich Manieri|Dec 23, 2019

She once ate an entire stack of pancakes – at least six or seven – while I was taking my daughter to the school bus. On Thanksgiving, several years ago, she ate the last piece of apple pie. I didn’t actually see her eat it but the dots were very connectable. She was the only one in the kitchen, the pie plate was empty, and there were pie crumbs all over her chin. She liked to nibble the bottoms of my shirts. The vet said it was a way for her to show affection, a sign of love. I have a drawer filled with t-shirts with little holes in them....

  • Sermonette: Dec. 23, 2019

Rev. Doug Nemitz, First Lutheran Church|Dec 23, 2019

The very first Christmas began with dreams and visions. In Luke’s gospel we read of the visions of Zechariah, Mary, shepherds, Simeon, and Anna. I have been considering the dreams of Joseph and the magi recorded in Matthew. The fourth dream recorded there is another dream of Joseph’s. We read: “When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child’s life are dead’” (Matthew 2:19-20).
