  • Getting things done in a divided Congress

    Matt Mackowiak|Dec 10, 2018

With the result of the midterm elections coming into clearer focus, it is now clear that Democrats will hold a comfortable majority in the House of Representatives come January. While one's reaction to this alteration of the power structure hinges upon his or her political preferences, there is one potential aspect of this change that most are begrudging: the prospect of watching yet another do-nothing Congress fueled by the childish obstinance of both sides. Poll after poll indicates that the American people detest when legislative branch...

  • Good grief! Critics miss Christmas specials' points

    Tom Purcell|Dec 10, 2018

Good grief! With everything in everyday American life politicized, count on someone, somewhere, being offended by something, anything— even classic Christmas TV specials. A recent “Huffington Post” tweet promoting a video about a holiday classic says "'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' is seriously problematic." Why? Because Rudolph's father, Donner, verbally abuses him for being different; because Santa is a bigot who mocks Donner for having an odd son; because the school coach encourages the o...

  • Sermonette- Dec. 10, 2018

Reverend Mindy Meier, First Congregational Church|Dec 10, 2018

The minor prophet, Habakkuk, spoke the word of God to the people of Israel in the midst of them being captured, massacred and pillaged. The powerful Babylonians, lead by viscous King Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed the temple, and taken the people of Israel into captivity. Back into slavery, where they’d be for 70 years. How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save? (Habakkuk 1:2) Habakkuk’s cry is the cry of every human heart. We see the violence around us: mass shootin...

Dec. 11, 2018 — When World War I broke out, a large number of North Dakotans still had fairly strong ties to the old country.
