This fall, Phyllis Schafer, now of Olympia, Wash., s...

As the champion for America’s small business, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) shines a spotlight on the importance of small business to our national and local economy. About half of all American workers are either employed by a small business or own a small business, and two out of three new jobs are created by small businesses. In North Dakota, 73,142 small businesses employ more than 198,000 workers. I encourage you to join me and many of our friends and neighbors as we show our support for our small business owners by ...

  • New report paints dire picture of low-wage jobs

    Joe Guzzardi|Nov 25, 2019

The Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program just released a study that casts serious doubt on President Trump’s insistence that the economy is improving, and that the employment market is strong. Brookings’ findings confirm that working doesn’t necessarily translate into earning a decent wage. Despite record low 3.6% unemployment, the Brookings’ report, “Meet the Low-Wage Workforce,” shows that 53 million Americans – 44% of all workers age 18 to 64 – hold low-wage jobs, earn median h...

  • Voters say they want a third party. They should vote accordingly.

    Thomas Knapp|Nov 25, 2019

According to an October Rasmussen poll, 38% of likely voters say they intend to vote for "someone other than President Trump or the Democratic presidential nominee" in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. In a three-way presidential race, 38% constitutes a winning plurality, assuming it's distributed among the states such that the Electoral College outcome reflects it. As a long-time activist in America's largest "third" political party, the Libertarian Party, I'm prone to find that number encouraging. On the other hand, I've seen numbers like...

  • This is the season for ceasefires and love

    LLoyd Omdahl|Nov 25, 2019

The era of good feeling between Thanksgiving and Christmas is an excellent time to take a serious look at a country muddled in violence, bigotry, intolerance, polarization and hatred. And, on top of that, polls show that Americans are getting more miserable, too. Polls also show that the polarized Republicans and Democrats hate each other more than ever before and the election season is just ahead when we will experience unprecedented recrimination, anger and hate. Polarization is trickling...

  • Sermonette: Change is A'coming

    Rhianne Bowman|Nov 25, 2019

Change is something I have never been very good at. When it comes to large changes, I tend to have a mini-crisis. Eventually, I will be okay, but each brand-new season almost always comes with a rocky start. An example of this is when I first started college at NDSU. I came into college as a music education major, and I quickly realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do. I love music but I didn’t want to study classical music for four years. I didn’t know what I wanted to change my major to so when it came to my second semester, I decided to drop...

  • History of New Rockford: Nov. 25. 2019

The morning of Nov. 1, 1902, revealed the remains of the Halloween pranks carried out by the town’s boys and girls; the “Transcript” commented that in a few cases property was destroyed and that was “to be deplored.” On that day, Mrs. A.J. Larkin went to Leeds to join her grain-buyer husband. Frank Lewis, who had suffered the previous several years with paralysis, died at his home near Tiffany. He had been bed-ridden for two or three years. He left a wife and five children. His funeral was on No...

Worried Daughter Dear Worried, Problem gambling among older adults is unfortunately on the rise. Studies suggest that more than 4 million Americans, age 65 and older, could have a gambling problem. • Eyes that see the good in things: Nov. 25, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Nov 25, 2019

While I think of my grandparents a lot, I miss them most around the holidays. When I think about someone who modeled gratitude and hospitality, I think of my maternal grandmother. Throughout our lives, she made it clear that she was thankful for her family and that we were always welcome in her home. No matter what she was doing, she appeared to love it when family driving through would unexpectedly drop in for a visit, coffee and a treat that she could always pull from the freezer. For most of...
