    Nathan Price|Oct 31, 2022

Earlier this year, 16-year-old Bailey Jacobson went to see the doctor with a cough. The results revealed abnormal counts in Bailey's system, such as low levels of hemoglobin - a protein responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. More tests followed, and not long after a CT scan revealed a mass in Bailey's chest. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lympho...

  • Labor shortages mean ex-cons get more opportunities for a second chance

    Michael Standaert|Oct 31, 2022

It would be easy to pass Double J Manufacturing and Repair without giving it so much as a second thought. The welding, truck repair and fencing business sits at the top of a rise on a dusty rural highway that could be just about anywhere on any stretch of lonesome road around the state. Sparks fly in the welding shop and wrenches crank in the garage as workers go about their day. What few would realize if they happened to poke their head into the shop is that some of the workers are not only rebuilding engines and battered fencing, but...

  • Bringing art to life

This week Transcript Publishing brought a new publication into existence. My sister, Victoria, is an artist. Ever since she was a little girl, she has drawn and painted and brought things to life with her imagination. Recently, she drew a series (26 in total) of sketches related to witches, and then she brought me her sketchbook with a project in mind. She wanted me to publish her sketches into a coloring book she could launch just in time for Halloween. Welcome "Witch, Please!" to the list of...

  • Halloween is for kids, isn't it?

    Tom Purcell|Oct 31, 2022

It's a question worth asking in these nutty times: how old is too old to trick-or-treat? On the question-and-answer website Quora, some people ask if the age of 12 is a good time to hang up the ghost costumes. That sounds about right to me. My mother would have decked me if I'd tried to collect candy in the ninth grade. Trick-or-treating has long been a rite of passage of childhood - that is, it used to be. Other people responded to Quora that they see no reason for older people - adults in...

  • "Equal protection: Serving sons and daughters"

    David Adler|Oct 31, 2022

In 1996, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark opinion in United States v. Virginia that exalted women’s rights under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment by ending the 157-year-old tradition of all-male education at the Virginia Military Institute, one of the nation’s most distinguished military colleges. Writing for a 7-1 majority, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg described VMI as “incomparable,” a school justly known for its “unparalleled record as a leadership training program,” dating back to its founding in 1839. The problem was,...

  • Sermonette: Oct. 31, 2022

    Mindy Meier|Oct 31, 2022

As the temperature drops, and harvest wraps up, I start to want to cook again, to sleep a little later, and spend longer evenings inside. It’s also a time to anticipate the very long, very cold months ahead, and think about vacation. Warm vacation. Goodness, I appreciate time away from the normal routines, time to make memories. But the older my kids get, the more I’m noticing that their memories have much more to do with routines, and normalcy, and how they felt in everyday life—the boring stuff. Because let’s think about it: One week of vaca...

  • Tree Talk: Going batty

    Gerri Makay|Oct 31, 2022

"They're creepy and they're kooky – mysterious and spooky - they're all together ooky..." Halloween is filled with images of things gloomy and cryptic: black cats and cauldrons, skeletons and spiders, broomsticks and bats. Bats? Of course! They fly around at night, and like vampires, they will bite and suck your blood! Actually, bats are very misunderstood. Bats are the only mammals that can fly, thanks to the leathery wing membrane that extends between the bones of the "fingers" and another wing membrane between the tail and the hind legs. T...

  • Our Outdoors: Scope it out

    Nick Simonson|Oct 31, 2022

There's nothing so clear and so adrenaline inducing as seeing a deer through the reticle of a scope. The movements of the animal are magnified, and if from the right position of concealment at a distance, natural and without knowledge, until the last moment, that the hunt is on. In those seconds leading up to the shot, knowing a scope is dead on can make all the difference between success and failure and these days ahead of the firearms deer opener give one final chance to make sure that both it...

  • The Peluso Report: Fast Fall on Devils Lake

    Mike Peluso|Oct 31, 2022

The first half of this week we couldn't have asked for better fall fishing weather. For me, the week was spent both on the Missouri River and on Devils Lake. Unfortunately, I was going to fish Lake Sakakawea later in the week, but Mother Nature said otherwise. I'll start with Devils Lake since I did get 3 awesome days on it this week. The walleye fishing was exceptional! We caught good numbers and quality. I spent two days trolling leadcore line and smaller crankbaits like Salmos, flicker...
