  • Rockets sting Hornets at homecoming

    Kyrie Dauenhauer|Oct 3, 2022

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets traveled to Fessenden on Thursday, Sept. 22 to take on the Harvey/Wells County Hornets. The Rockets rained on their Homecoming parade, taking them down 3-0. With the Hornets losing seven seniors from last year, many players needed to step up in the leadership role. With that deficit in the Hornets lineup, the Rockets took advantage and played the court well. NR-S juniors, Kelsie Belquist, Lucy Meier and Lora Wobbema were three of the Rockets' players playing...

  • Together we fight: Rockets get Region 4 win over Wildcats

    Kyrie Dauenhauer|Oct 3, 2022

After being named champions at the Devils Lake Varsity Tourney, the Rockets were ready to keep their winning streak aflame. On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the Rockets hosted the Benson County Wildcats, a Super Region 4 competitor. Before the start of the game, the Rockets and Wildcats joined hands in a prayer. Not only were they praying for Bailey Jacobson, as she fights Stage 3 Hodgkin's Lymphoma, but also for Benson County football coach, Bradley Kitzmann, as he battles lung cancer, and a Benson...

  • Setbacks stall Rockets in Cando

    Nathan Price|Oct 3, 2022

Going into Cando on Friday, Sept. 23, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets must have been feeling pretty good about their chances. The Rockets had just won two straight games and were undefeated in region play, while the North Star Bearcats had just lost three in a row and were winless in Region 4. However, what occurred that Friday night was disastrous for NR-S. At first, the game began relatively close, a 93-yard kickoff return by Haydon Meier gave NR-S a 6-point boost to start the game, and by...

  • Our Outdoors: On the Upswing

    Nick Simonson|Oct 3, 2022

Grass equals birds. Habitat equals deer. Clean water equals fish. These are the things I along with many other hunters and anglers have come to know in the outdoors. I can recall once cutting from corner to corner on a dirt field to grab the pickup truck and collect my dog and hunting buddy who were finishing off a walk, and there in the middle of nothing but black dust and wheat stubble a covey of partridge flushed, surprising me straight out of my early autumn evening thoughts with enough...

  • The Peluso Report: Not Ready for Beet Juice!

    Mike Peluso|Oct 3, 2022

If you follow me on my Snapchat you know there are two things I absolutely hate. One is the beet juice they use on our streets in Bismarck in the winter, the other is wind. As you can guess by the time of year, I haven't been complaining about the beet juice yet. The wind on the other hand, that's another story. It's been a battle trying to guide with the heavy winds we have had the last month or so. Now for this week's fishing report. Even with the heavy winds, both Devils Lake and Lake...

  • Brad's Bites: Dropping Degrees

    Brad Durick|Oct 3, 2022

The nights have been cold over the past week, and we are losing just about a degree per night in water temperature on the Red River. Right now, we are just under 60 degrees, meaning there really isn't much time left for the good catfish bite of 2022. Not much has changed in pattern over the past week, however. The fish are hanging out in the deeper off-current holes. Fish off the drop off of the inside bends where the current is pushing away from you. In the morning plan on at least a 30-minute sit and that can be shortened some later in the...

  • Northwest ND the New Pheasant Destination

    Nick Simonson|Oct 3, 2022

With the youth pheasant weekend on tap in just a few days on Sat. Oct. 1, and the general pheasant opener just a week later on Oct. 8, hunters are checking their boots, loading shells in their vests, and figuring out which parcels of their favorite hunting grounds they'll hit when their opportunity opens and the first rooster flushes. According to North Dakota Game & Fish (NDG&F) Upland Game Biologist RJ Gross, a general increase across the board in all four major pheasant categories – brood s...

  • Shannon Brandt charged with Class AA Felony Murder, bail set at $1 million

    Nathan Price|Oct 3, 2022

On Friday, Sept. 30, Shannon Brandt was arrested and charged with Murder, a Class AA Felony. After an alleged hit-and-run on Sept. 18 in McHenry, N.D., which resulted in the death of 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson, Brandt was charged with criminal vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal crash. According to a Sept. 30 press release from Foster County State's Attorney, Kara Brinster, Brandt's original charge of criminal vehicular homicide was dismissed, and has now been replaced with...
