  • What it Takes: Finding a Pal

    Oakley Brazil|Sep 28, 2020

Legend has it that I've wanted a horse since before I could walk. I probably even asked for a pony for my birthday a time or two. The thing is, you can't just go to a pet shop and buy a horse. Even if you could, horses require special living quarters, and a lot of care. The next best thing I could do was find a friend with a horse. I was lucky to meet Nan Taverna and to have her invite me to meet her horse, which she stables at Craig & Bonnie Voigt's barnyard outside of town. Pal, a 14 ½...

  • Don't blame global warming for killer wildfires

    Michael Reagan|Sep 28, 2020

Lots of people in politics and the media out here in California are blaming global warming for the 26 major wildfires that have killed at least 24, burned more than 3 million acres and destroyed thousands of homes. But let’s get real. This state has been plagued by wildfires long before baby left-wingers like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez decided that they’re caused by humans heating up the planet by burning fossil fuels. I grew up in Los Angeles in the 1950s. We didn’t have as many people, cars...

  • What Ginsburg's death means for the 2020 presidential election

    William Cooper|Sep 28, 2020

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was perhaps the most consequential attorney in American history. As an advocate, she transformed the landscape for womens' rights. And, as a Justice on the Supreme Court, she authored numerous groundbreaking opinions. Her death on Friday may also be immensely consequential: Her departure from the Supreme Court might change the winner of the 2020 presidential election from Joe Biden to Donald Trump. The 2020 election may be decided by the Supreme Court – just like it was in 2...

  • Measure #2 solves nothing in higher ed.

    Lloyd Omdahl|Sep 28, 2020

Proposing to double the size of the Board of Higher Education, Measure #2 threatens to burden the system more than help. This November 3 ballot measure has yet to be explained by its legislative sponsors so it’s merits are still a mystery. Playing in the background we have a 80-year gripe by the Legislature against the Board. It was created in the later 1930s after capitol politics threatened the professionalism of the institutions. Friends of higher education, primarily in Fargo, decided to i...

  • Sermonette: God (probably) doesn't want to bail you out

    Joe Greiner|Sep 28, 2020

God (probably) doesn’t want to bail you out by Joe Greiner Evangelical Free Church In Jeremiah chapter 15, we come across some of the most painful language Jeremiah ever uses to describe his situation. Why has my pain been perpetual And my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you indeed be to me a deceptive stream With water that is unreliable? Jeremiah 15:18 Jeremiah is in anguish because his calling to be God’s prophet has led to an extreme isolation. Everyone hates him. In the nation, he is entirely alone and despised by all. He has...

  • Roof and steeple restored on New Rockford's oldest church

    Sep 28, 2020

Miss Norah Kennedy went to Moorhead, Minn., with her little brother Harold, who would be undergoing another operation. That evening there was a dance at the Mr. and...

  • We the People: Improving civil dialogue in the November election

    David Adler|Sep 28, 2020

The vast majority of Americans, polls reveal, lament the ugliness and incivility that punctuate our politics. The contentiousness, coarseness and divisiveness have spawned widespread apathy, and undermined faith and confidence in our system. Those who continue to participate agree that our nation requires wholesome remedies, sooner rather than later. While it is unrealistic to expect a standard of decorum that reflects lawn tennis language, it is not too much to expect elements of civility. Consider five modest pledges that citizens can accept...

  • Archival Anecdotes: Comforts of Home

    Rachel Brazil|Sep 28, 2020

Comforts of Home The mid- to late-1800s was a booming time for North Dakota, as settlers arrived from nearby states such as Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. Toward the turn of the century, foreign immigrants made their way to the prairie from countries such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, England, Scotland, Germany and more. Often immigrants would have to travel via boat and train to make it to their destination. They had arrived with the intent to be Americans, but that didn't stop...

  • Rockets compete, but fall to Carrington in four

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 28, 2020

On paper, it was a four-set defeat to their geographic rivals 16 miles to the south. But New Rockford-Sheyenne showed at times that they can be every bit the team that historically-tough Carrington has shown over the past decade, if they can put all phases of their game together. NR-S fought to extend the match after falling to a two-set deficit by besting the Cardinals, 25-18, in set three, but couldn't maintain that momentum and ultimately fell, 19-25, 21-25 and 16-25 in the other three sets....

  • Rockets routed by Eagles

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 28, 2020

Rarely has it been the case, at least in recent New Rockford-Sheyenne football lore, when a game has turned against them to the extent that the Rockets aren’t even competitive at the final horn. The North Border Eagles accumulated 368 total yards, 304 of those on the ground, and shut out NR-S from the first quarter on en route to a runaway 50-8 win over the visitors in Pembina Friday night, September 18. Already trailing by a 14-0 score in the first quarter, the Rockets got their lone points on...
