  • MEET GROCERY'S POWER COUPLE

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 16, 2019

On Monday, Sept. 9, Bruce and Colleen Hagen both got a big surprise. Colleen may have known that Bruce was to receive the "Grocer of the Year" award from the North Dakota Grocers Association that night (and she had been working hard to both get Bruce to the banquet and organize a congratulatory event at the store), but there was one thing she didn't know -the award was actually presented to the couple, 2019 Grocers of the Year! It was an honor well deserved, as for the past 38 years they've been...

  • Where are they now?

    Kristi Frahm|Sep 16, 2019

People do not have to be New Rockford natives to recognize the Romanoski name. Even transplants soon learn about the legendary BR Chevy and Olds dealership that was owned and operated by William (Bill) and Mary Romanoski from the early 1960s to the late 1990s. The next Romanoski generation has been quite successful in the car-selling business, too, both here in New Rockford and in Sheboygan, Wisc. Charmain and Steve Romanoski, local high school graduates, tell their story of a good life before,...

  • Can Scooby-Doo really be 50 years old?

    Danny Tyree|Sep 16, 2019

Do you long for the days when the only outbursts our delicate ears had to worry about were the Z word ("Zoinks!") and the J word ("Jinkies!")? Then you might want to pop open some Scooby Snacks and celebrate the fact that Sept. 13 marked the 50th anniversary of "What a Night for a Knight," the first episode of "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" Yes, the generational torch (of viewers and creative personnel) has been passed time and again during the past 50 years (and I can only hope that the more...

  • How Congress spent their summer vacation

    Will Durst|Sep 16, 2019

Alert! Alert! This is a test. This is only a test. A test of the Congressional Re- Arrival Warning System. Residents of the District of Colombia should remain on the lookout for male and female politicians walking the streets disguised as normal citizens. Although expert at camouflage, they can be recognized, notably by the crisp lines of their plumage, consisting mostly of dark business suits, but also by the incessant habit of spending every waking hour dialing district donors for dark dirty dollars. The second week of September is...

  • Prices keep rising but lives are still cheap

    LLoyd Omdahl|Sep 16, 2019

There is little doubt that we are seeing a universal rise in prices. Nevertheless, lives are getting cheaper as society continues to tolerate deadly public policy, usually in exchange for money and power. For several years, we have failed to attack gun deaths with any degree of commitment. After every mass slaughter, policymakers are outraged about gun violence and promise to find the silver bullet that will end the problem tomorrow morning. The outrage soon melts away and remains latent until...

  • Letter to the Editor: Sept. 16, 2019

    Sep 16, 2019

Drug addiction and abuse is now being considered the largest man-made health crisis ever in recorded history. Since the late 1990’s, the drug crisis has surged forward, leaving epic devastation in its wake. Now, more than ever, it’s important that literally everyone out there knows how to spot the signs and symptoms of drug abuse. Right now, 1 out of 2 people struggles with some sort of drug issue; a figure staggering it of itself. The more the public understands how to identify drug abuse, the more the public can finally stand up and do someth...

  • Living on Purpose: The story of our life is being written

    Dr. Billy Holland|Sep 16, 2019

When it comes to finding our place in this world, let’s consider two categories. The first one I call, “floating down the river.” Picture a scenario of someone napping in a small boat without a compass or a paddle. Having a spectator mentality, they have no map or intentional direction but rather are just hoping for the best. It’s also common for these individuals to throw pity parties from time to time, as a happy-go-lucky lifestyle usually runs into serious disappointments. Often haunted...

  • Sermonette: Sept. 16, 2019

Rev Doug Nemitz, First Lutheran Church, New Rockford|Sep 16, 2019

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.” — Luke 15:1-2 It seems to me that in our rush to get into the stories that attract our interest in Luke 15:1-10, the Gospel reading for Sunday, Sept. 15, we often skip past these introductory statements that set the scene and miss at least two interesting questions. First, why were the tax collectors and sinners attracted to Jesus? Second, why did their attra...

  • Dakota Datebook: Sept. 16, 2019

    Merry Helm|Sep 16, 2019

The McClellan Saddle Sept. 17, 2019 — The saddle issued to the 7th Cavalry – the one to which Custer belonged – was developed by General George McClellan during the period of the Civil War. His design was unique in that the saddleback was open in the center, allowing for a sort of air conditioning between horse and rider. The design was also useful in winter— cavalry riders wore heavy woolen greatcoats that draped down over their legs and the horse’s sides. Warmth from the horse’s back transferred through the opening in the saddle and was cap...

  • No. 1 ranked Rockets remain undefeated

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 16, 2019

Slow and steady may win the race, as the fable "The Tortoise and the Hare" has proven time and time again. In this instance, however, the hare put his head down and kicked it into overdrive, leaving nothing to chance or cocksure attitude. The top-ranked and unbeaten New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets remained that way by bending, but not breaking, against the unrelenting ground game of the fifth-ranked St. John Woodchucks, taking a 42-18 win to further solidify their spot atop Nine-Man Region 2...
