  • AARP Scam Alert: How to protect your identity

    Sep 10, 2018

The battle to protect your identity is getting a little easier – or at least cheaper. A new federal law going into effect Sept. 21 makes it free to freeze your credit file with the three major credit rating companies. In the past, Equifax, Experian and Transunion have charged fees to freeze your credit reports to help protect against fraud. In North Dakota, the freezes cost $5, and you needed to pay it to each credit rating agency separately. You also had to pay to unfreeze and refreeze your credit reports. A credit freeze locks your credit fil...

  • N.D. Finances are a house of cards

    LLoyd Omdahl|Sep 10, 2018

We have the well-plugging fund, budget stabilization fund, abandoned mine fund, highway tax distribution fund, Legacy fund, coal development fund, Center of Excellence Fund and a few dozen more funds listed on the home page of the state treasurer. I would also recommend checking the five charts on her website explaining the oil tax distribution system we have patched together since oil was discovered in 1951. The only thing we lack is a “go-fund-me” fund. This house of fiscal cards has been cre...

  • The kids are alright

    Corey Seymour|Sep 10, 2018

Some good news amidst this end-of-summertime insanity: The dwindling group of people gullible enough—or simply stubborn enough—to keep believing Donald Trump’s preposterous and relentless lies is dwindling even further. According to the most recent nonpartisan polls with the largest sampling audience, only 36 percent of Americans say they approve of the job he’s doing—a five-point drop from the previous month, and his lowest rating ever. Even Republicans, ever-ready to support the leader of...

  • Sermonette: September 10, 2018

Bart Salazar, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church|Sep 10, 2018

"A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace, for it trusts in you." Isaiah 26:3 Do you believe that the United States of America is a nation at peace? You probably would not be alone if your answer to this question was no. Our country is one that appears to be deeply divided, and yet this biblical passage from Isaiah gives us a starting point for examining why the United States is not at peace. Perhaps, the nation lacks a firm purpose. It clearly had one, at one point. However, this might have been forgotten. This issue will be dealt with more...

  • Living on Purpose: Every person chooses a path

    Dr. Billy Holland|Sep 10, 2018

I had a serious conversation the other day with a middle-aged man and we talked for a couple of hours about God. I've known him for years and we've had these discussions before but I noticed he has become stronger in his opinions which by the way are based on atheism. He is a likeable person, hard worker, great husband and popular. He is also a very talented artist and sculptor and concentrates much of his artwork on the dark world of the supernatural. He has studied Greek mythology and loves...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: September 10, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Sep 10, 2018

I have to tell you that I was the recipient of an act of kindness last week. While standing in line at Wal-Mart, I wasn’t really paying attention and my bottle of Coke Zero evidently tipped, falling past the divider on the cashier line and into the purchases of the woman in front of me. The cashier rang it up, but when the other woman realized she had been charged for my bottle of pop, she turned and handed it to me and told me to have a Coke on her. I tried to pay her as she turned and w...
