  • The butterfly effect

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 5, 2022

We’ve had some heavy news weeks this summer. Burglaries, fatal crashes, residents fighting cancer, and a suspected murder-suicide were among the hard news headlines of the summer 2022 news cycle in our area. That said, we’ve also celebrated a lot. Our communities have a way of coming together when we really need to, don’t we? When I reflect on this past summer, a song by The Byrds comes to mind, “Turn, Turn, Turn.” We’ve had “A time to dance, a time to mourn,” all in the past few months. Ple...

  • The elephant in the college classroom

    Tom Purcell|Sep 5, 2022

"Half of that goes to the bank for your college fund!" That's what my father told me in the 8th grade, when I got my first paycheck for waking up at 5:30 a.m. to ride my bike a few miles to Cool Springs Driving Range before school, where I plucked golf balls for a dollar an hour. My dad had six kids to feed on a single income, after all. Paying my full college tuition bill was never going to be an option. There was only one option for me: work. When I got a little older I started mowing lawns...

In a landmark opinion that reflected the Supreme Court’s determination to create one rule for rich and poor alike, the High Tribunal held for the first time that the Sixth Amendment requires states to provide for court-appointed attorneys in all felony cases. Justice Hugo Black wrote the Court’s 9-0 opinion: “From the very beginning, our state and national constitutions and l...

  • Living on Purpose: Words can be forgiven but not forgotten

    Billy Holland|Sep 5, 2022

We will never rise above or go beyond what we believe and what we speak. It’s a spiritual revelation to comprehend that words have power and where there is privilege there is also responsibility. I realize that we have much to pray about, but this request is crucial if we are to live a holy life of integrity and respect. “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips,” Psalm 141:3. Since what we say is what we think, it would be wise to monitor what we listen to and w...

  • Sermonette: God's playbook series #1

    Pastor Joe Greiner|Sep 5, 2022

This September, we are going to be examining a few of God’s plays in his playbook. When a football coach goes into a game, he enters with a playbook. As I understand it, a playbook is a collection of the plays that he can call during the game. These plays are in his book either because he likes them, or because his team is particularly good at them, or he likes to keep some surprises up his sleeve. Whatever the reason, whether he coaches 10 years or 40 years, those are the plays fans will likely see over and over. Similarly, God has p...

As a bonus, fertilizing in early fall can repair any damage to your lawn caused by the heat of summer, strengthening your lawn for the cold of winter and lead to a quicker green-up in spring. Select a winterizer fertilizer. This fertilizer has the...
