  • NDSU Extension warns against ergot-contaminated feeds

    Sep 3, 2018

Although ergot is not a new problem in North Dakota, more of it is being documented in several areas of the state, according to Gerald Stokka, North Dakota State University Extension veterinarian and livestock stewardship specialist. Ergot is a fungal disease that can develop in grasses and cereal grains, and it can be toxic to livestock that consume it. "Ergotism is generally a sporadic disease that can affect ruminants, horses, swine and humans," Stokka says. "Clinical signs in cattle are gangrenous (death of soft tissue) or cutaneous...

    Rachel Brazil|Sep 3, 2018

On Monday Aug. 27, the New Rockford Lions Club hosted Sean Levesque of the Minnesota-based nonprofit Love 2 Hope to discuss the important and difficult topic of human trafficking. An often misunderstood term, human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, and according to Levesque and countless experts, is far more common than you’d think. Trafficking involves the movement of people by means of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of forced labor and servitude, including but not limited to sex-trafficking. Here in our small and seemingl...

  • Labor and other neglected days of honor

    LLoyd Omdahl|Sep 3, 2018

Out of the bitter labor management conflicts of the 1880s and 1890s evolved what is known today as Labor Day passed into law in 1894. But it has gone the way of several other holidays, honored more for its shopping opportunities than recognition of the working people. Few spend Memorial Day honoring the defenders of the realm. Presidents Washington and Lincoln were denigrated by combining their birthdays into one generic President’s Day in which we have the liberty to celebrate presidents of o...

  • President's Point

    Calvin Packard|Sep 3, 2018

The death of Senator John McCain has me thinking about the word, perspective. I was once asked, how many sides to a coin? The answer is three: the head, the tail and the rough edges. The point is this- there is your perspective, the other person's perspective and the truth. Perspective is the reality of the holder, and may not be 100 percent all factual, because there are these things called feelings that get involved in perception. To most, Senator McCain was an honorable man and military...

  • Letter to the Editor: September 3, 2018

    Sep 3, 2018

In response to the recent article by Sen. Rich Wardner and Rep Al Carlson “Big Ideas, big results” they make what could have been “So Simple” very complicated. You cannot deny the Bakken Oil Play has been a huge benefit to the entire state of North Dakota. At the beginning, our money coffers were very low and the development of our oil resources provided an opportunity to help many North Dakotans. We did that, but along the way, we helped a lot of non- North Dakotans as well. The huge impact to Western North Dakota could have been prevented by...

  • The hypocrisy of #MeToo and female solidarity

    Christine Flowers|Sep 3, 2018

Myth-creation is a distinctive attribute of Americans. One of my favorite movies is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. John Ford’s classic told the story of a man played by Jimmy Stewart, who was given credit for killing a homicidal thug in a small western town. In fact, it wasn’t Stewart who killed villainous Lee Marvin but John Wayne. No one knew it, though, because Wayne was hidden from view when he pulled the trigger. Stewart got the glory, and a myth was born at the expense of a more com...

  • Holland: Nothing can keep us from God's love

    Dr. Billy Holland|Sep 3, 2018

Memories can be a wonderful place to visit when they are pleasant and filled with peace and joy. On the other hand, not all of our experiences have been good and can be more like a haunted house on a dark and stormy night. We all have our collections of thoughts and our own task of trying to figure out a way to deal with them. As most of us know, there are positive ways and negative ways to handle our past experiences. We can look around and see that many people are not doing such a good job...

  • Thinking about health: Choosing health insurance in a confusing marketplace

Trudy Lieberman, Rural Health News Service|Sep 3, 2018

Anyone buying health insurance this fall faces a daunting task: having to choose among multiple, often complex options that offer widely varying degrees of protection. For starters, association health plans are back, allowing small businesses to band together to buy insurance. So are the short-term policies that may last from only a few months to a year. Then there are plans offered by church ministries that look like insurance but really aren’t. Plus, multiple and complex options remain from the Affordable Care Act. And to complicate matters f...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: Rules to remember when hunting in WMAs

Doug Leier, North Dakota Game and Fish Department|Sep 3, 2018

Whether it's early September archery deer hunting, dove hunting, or late season pheasant hunting, North Dakota's 220,000 acres of state wildlife management areas are open to all hunters and there is no preference or priority given. And yet, the state Game and Fish Department has a number of rules and regulations in place to balance and reduce potential conflicts, which can and do occur when areas attract crowds, or people try to preempt space. This time of years, one of the more applicable...
