Even though she doesn't get paid, she still puts in the time and the work. The New Rockford Chamber has selected Tiffany Schaefer as the August Employee of the Month. This mother of four keeps three concession stands at local sporting events operating efficiently year-round, a role she gladly fulfills. Schaefer began her tenure on the Rocket Boosters board of directors in 2016, when her oldest son Connor was in fifth grade. She and her husband Mike later joined the SNR Baseball board in 2020. No...
On Wednesday, August 21, the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office executed a coordinated operation that resulted in the issuing of 18 various citations. The charges largely related to traffic incidents, such as driving under suspension, speeding violations and failure to wear seatbelt, to name a few. Eddy County Sheriff Paul Lies said they had a few extra officers on duty to execute a search warrant, and therefore decided to utilize the extra manpower to crack down on traffic and other violations. T...

On Thursday, Aug. 22, students were once again filing into New Rockford-Sheyenne School, marking the end of summer break and kicking off yet another year of learning. In the days since, many of those students have been getting to know the district's seven new teachers. Last week, we introduced three, and in this edition we highlight the other four. Ellen Lagunzad is the district's new high school English teacher. She is originally from the city of Manila in the Philippines, where she said she's...
Late and inconsistent mail delivery of newspapers is threatening the future of the industry, the director of the North Dakota Newspaper Association said during a roundtable discussion Monday with representatives from the United States Postal Service. Cecile Wehrman, the NDNA’s executive director and a weekly newspaper publisher herself, said weekly newspapers especially are susceptible to what she considers poor service from the USPS. Weeklies generally are their community’s sole provider of news, she said, and some either have limited onl...

This August a food program for Spirit Lake Nation in northeastern North Dakota had to send people home without block cheese and pork. Soon the center will be without dozens of items, and they don’t know when the shortages will end. Since May, many enrolled in the Food Distribution Programs on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) and senior commodity food programs have faced such shortages. Delayed, incomplete or missing deliveries increased after the U.S. Department of Agriculture switched to a single distribution and warehouse provider for all o...

The United States Postal Service is a vital partner to newspapers. We pay them to provide a service, that is to deliver our print editions to every address in America. That partnership, however, is facing new challenges. I was among a select few representing North Dakota newspapers at a roundtable discussion hosted by U.S. Sen. John Hoeven on Monday. An article about that meeting first appeared in the Grand Forks Herald on Tuesday, and is republished in this edition of both the Transcript and th...
All anybody needs to know about a free economy is alive and well thanks to social media flea markets, such as Facebook Marketplace. While procrastinating every morning, I review this site looking at cars, lakefront homes and a wide variety of highly entertaining items people are trying to hock. Facebook Marketplace offers a hands-on lesson in how free-market economics really works. You see, commerce and trading are what humans do. They are the basis of wealth creation and a thriving...
Is the threat of impeachment sufficient to deter Supreme Court justices from abusing power or engaging in other acts of misbehavior that would warrant their removal from the nation’s High Bench? The Framers of the Constitution thought so, as Alexander Hamilton explained, but many Americans across our nation doubt the premise. Consequently, they have become advocates for Supreme Court reform. Some lobby for an enforceable ethics code, some seek term limits for the justices, and some argue for an expansion of the size of the Court, primarily t...
Did you know you could have laboratory and radiology exams completed in Carrington even if you do not see a provider in Carrington? If you live in Carrington or surrounding communities, there is no reason you need to go elsewhere to have your laboratory and radiology exams completed. CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington’s laboratory and radiology departments offer many services that can be completed in-house. Some laboratory tests need to be sent to our reference lab, but turnaround time to get test results is only about 1-2 days. If you would lik...
As a freelance faith columnist and Christian author, I’m honored to have the opportunity to provide thoughts and ideas to relay to others. I’m sure all Bible teachers and pastors feel they are God’s messengers. What I do is nothing more special than how millions of other Christians serve Him, and I humbly acknowledge that most are more talented and effective. God’s people are important pieces of a large puzzle, stones in His wall, and a voice among many who represent the one who created everythi...
I really enjoy writing these sermonettes. I know that may seem odd, especially considering that this September I’ve had to prepare four different lessons each week. Despite how overwhelmed I’ve been, I still enjoy writing these sermonettes, even if no one reads them. This form of teaching allows me a great deal of freedom to spend as much or as little time as I want on ideas and thoughts I have. These short, written lessons work especially well when dealing with a new (to me at least) idea that I’ve found in my Bible studies. This week, I’ve...

The New Rockford-Sheyenne/Maddock (NR-S/M) Rockets kicked off their season with a bang on Friday, Aug. 23. NR-S/M traveled to St. John to take on the Woodchucks for their season opener, and last year's 9-man semi-finalists looked every bit as dominant as they did a year ago. However, they'll be hoping their first play of the season isn't a bad omen for the rest of their year. The Rockets were set to receive the opening kickoff and start the game on offense, but a fumble on the return gave...

For the past two years, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets have been to the Class B Volleyball State Tournament, and with another season getting underway, this year's team is hoping they can make it three in a row. It'll be harder than ever this year, however, as three seniors who were instrumental to the team's previous success won't be returning. But Sara Myhre, head coach of the NR-S Rockets, says there's still plenty of talent and experience on this year's roster. "We have four returning...

There is truly so much beauty and wonder in nature if we take a few minutes in our busy schedules to appreciate it. I was looking at a tree last month when there was much more moisture, and something in the mulch caught my eye. No, it wasn't an insect, not this time anyway. It was a type of fungus called bird's nest fungi. Bird's nest fungi are small. You might easily step on them in the garden without noticing it. They range in size but are usually under one-quarter inch in width. I learned...
