Before the new website, limited information for the county was crammed into a single tab on the City of New Rockford’s web page. Now, everything residents need to know is located on its own, easy-to-navigate website. Eddy County Public Information Officer, Tiffany Harr, said the p...

  • Setting the net high

    Kyrie O'Connor|Aug 22, 2022

Floor burn season is back. Yes, you read that right. Floor burn season, also known as volleyball. You may be thinking, "Why is she calling the volleyball season 'floor burn season'?" Well, sometimes the volleyball players have to dive for the ball, which usually ends up with a nasty floor burn to the knee, elbow, or anywhere on the body for that matter. Anyways, back to the main point of this article. The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets' volleyball team officially kicked off their season with...

    Nathan Price|Aug 22, 2022

Here’s your weekly rundown of some of the most interesting headlines from newspapers across North Dakota. Save the Reservoir From a distance, the Sheyenne River reservoir in Harvey appears navigable, inviting and charming, even. Certainly, swimmers must be using its beaches. Sorry, no. Not now, anyway. Upon closer inspection, this being the first week of August, the reservoir’s weed infestation is apparent; visibly disturbing in certain areas. Short of taking over the Harvey body of water, it...

"To that end, our administration is creating a framework...

  • Letter to the Editor: On the road again!

    Craig Voigt|Aug 22, 2022

Whoa! I bet we are in the running as the most expensive town per capita in the state to live in. Granted, we are getting some much needed improvements, although I’m not in favor of property owners footing the bill every time. With these new special assessments, there are going to be people that will have to sell because they can’t pay both the property taxes and special assessments. If they actually make improvements in relation to your property it would be welcome, but if you live on gravel, your property will be devalued due to the high ass...

  • Under Construction

    Amy Wobbema|Aug 22, 2022

As the old joke goes, there are only two seasons in North Dakota: winter and road construction. If there was a year where that is more true, it would be 2022. Our area saw snowstorms in late April, and as soon as the white crap melted work was underway on numerous construction projects. This construction season our pages have been filled with updates on the various projects underway. We're "under construction," folks, "a work in progress." Three major highway projects are underway, according to...

  • Lochner: Clashing judicial views and the state police powers

    David Adler|Aug 22, 2022

Justice Rufus Peckham’s opinion in the landmark case of Lochner v. New York (1905), cemented the Supreme Court’s embrace of the liberty of contract doctrine and its tilt toward the laissez-faire economic philosophy of the day. Justice Peckham’s passion for substantive due process and the Court’s assertion of authority to substitute its own preferences for those of state lawmakers unleashed an enduring debate on the methods of constitutional interpretation and the scope of a state’s police power. His opinion propelled “the general rule of abs...

  • Sermonette: August 22, 2022

    Pastor Jeff Halvorson|Aug 22, 2022

Do not fear. Fear Not. Do not be afraid. All these commands are found in the bible. The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, a young Jewish virgin girl, and announced that she was to become the mother of our Savior. He tells her to not be afraid. It is certainly understandable that when all of a sudden, an archangel from God appears and starts talking to us, who wouldn’t be afraid? Joseph is visited by an angel in a dream and is told that he is not to be afraid to continue his betrothal to Mary even though she is with child. She had not been u...

  • Living on Purpose: The lines of communication are open

The path to victory was never promised to be an easy one. It’s filled with faith blended with hard work, persistence, and a passion to follow God’s directions. What type of victory are you referring to? The only success and accomplishment that has eternal value is when we follow and accomplish God’s will. So, what is this? Well, there is His general will which includes His written word that is given to help us learn how to live for Him. There is also His specific will where God has desig...

  • Dakota Gardener: Road trip to the International Peace Garden

    Ester E. McGinnis|Aug 22, 2022

North Dakota is known as the Peace Garden State. However, surprisingly few North Dakotans have made the trip to visit the International Peace Garden near Dunseith, North Dakota. Straddling the border between North Dakota and Manitoba, the garden is a horticultural and historical treasure that is celebrating the 90th anniversary of its dedication. Henry J. Moore advocated for a garden to be built on the U.S.-Canadian border to commemorate the longest peaceful international border. A site was...

Fettig runs four day care facilities which serve around 90 children, accounting for full-time, drop-in and after-school care. Managing that many children in four separate facilities near her home at all hours of the day, calls for extreme...

  • Our Outdoors: Leading Indicators

    Nick Simonson|Aug 22, 2022

Past performance is not indicative of future results. If you've ever caught the last five seconds of an investment commercial on the radio promising big returns in real estate, or how profitable opening your own franchise might be, you've likely grabbed that phrase out of the disclaimers crammed in a fast-talking, Micro Machines-style word salad spewed by the narrator in the final moments of the pitch. Oftentimes, it seems like the time devoted to the caveats and buyer beware portion of the adve...
