  • Rapunzel vs. Frankenstein: yes, that's a thing

    Danny Tyree|Aug 12, 2019

I'm a big softie when it comes to children's books. I remember my first library card (TWO trips to the library that glorious day!), and my held-together-with-duct-tape childhood copy of Little Golden Book "Danny Beaver's Secret" (by Patsy and Richard Scarry) sits proudly on my writing desk. So, I was overjoyed to have the opportunity to pose some questions to author Martin Powell, whose latest children's books, "Private Eye Princess and the Emerald Pea" and "Rapunzel vs. Frankenstein" go on...

  • Raging moderate: the best words.

    Will Durst|Aug 12, 2019

Nobody knows what the earliest word used by humans was. The general consensus is the Sumerians developed the first written language around 3500 BC, using wedge-shaped symbols called cuneiform. Scholars hypothesize that the first word was either "ouch" or "me," although "pie" had to have been up there since the shapes surely reminded the Sumerians of it. For the last 5,500 years humans have spent lifetimes searching for the best words to communicate. The precise word can make the difference between understanding and confusing people to the...

  • "I can't believe they'd do that to people"

    Tony Bender|Aug 12, 2019

India and Gus the Wonder Pug waited in my old Mustang convertible while I surveyed my hat rack, trying to decide which one I would take on our pilgrimage. I finally grabbed my Baltimore Orioles cap. The sun was high when we stopped at the Sitting Bull and Sakakawea monuments near Mobridge. We stood a while at an obelisk marking Sakakawea's time on this earth, a legend at 19, dead in 1812 at 25 of a fever during childbirth, about 25 miles from that spot. India and Gus trotted out ahead of me to the chief's grave on a bluff, overlooking the...

    Pastor Jeff Halvorson, Sheyenne-Oberon Area Ministry|Aug 12, 2019

It was to my great happiness that I spent the last week of July in Colorado. It seems that whenever people get together at funerals, there are a number of people that say, “we need to get together sometime just for fun, not for a funeral.” Well, that’s exactly what we four brothers did. There were five of us originally but the oldest died a few years back. We said the same thing while we were in the hospital saying goodbye to our older brother. Well, we finally did it. We got together just for fun. We missed our sister of course who couldn’t ma...

This, coupled with fierce determination, led his...

Her son was starting his seventh week of Air Force basic training, and only had 17 days before his basic training would be finished. She said that when she is working the night shift, there is more time to think about things and she spent a lot of time thinking about her son that night. When she got off work, she pulled into a...

  • Too big too fast: North Dakota's other housing problem

Sam Easter, North Dakota Newspaper Association|Aug 12, 2019

Pat Bohn has spent a long time working in corrections- long enough to climb from a rank-and-file parole and probation officer in the 1990s to a job heading North Dakota's entire parole and probation operation today. He's seen a lot of things change. Chief among them is a philosophical shift in how North Dakota treats its criminals. Gone are the highly punitive, tough-on-crime ideas of the 1990s. Now, state leaders – from the Legislature to the front offices at the State Penitentiary – have com...
