  • Offense and controversy are necessary in a free society

    Christine Flowers|Aug 9, 2021

The other day, someone reminded me that I had a public Facebook page entitled "Christine Flowers, Columnist and Radio Host." I rarely post there, which is why I'd almost forgotten about it. My old editor had suggested I create a public page, after stalkers and people who didn't like what I wrote (almost exclusively readers and agitators from the left), had done some very unsavory things. She thought that setting up a "public" space would protect me and my loved ones from the usual abuses of...

  • "Abuse and Circumvention of the Advice and Consent Clause"

    David Adler|Aug 9, 2021

The framers of the Constitution inserted the Advice and Consent Clause to insure joint decision making between the president and the Senate in the exercise of the treaty making and appointment powers. What happens when the aims, purposes and spirit of that clause are abused or circumvented by either one of the joint decision makers? We focus this week on the ability of presidents to thwart the constitutional blueprint for advice and consent of the Senate. Presidents possess considerable means to abuse and circumvent the Advice and Consent...

  • Letter to the Editor: Aug. 9, 2021

    Arch Simonson|Aug 9, 2021

Dear Editor: With the acceleration of online shopping, and widespread use of contactless cards and mobile payments in stores during the coronavirus pandemic, almost every retail purchase made today is paid for with a credit card or debit card. That’s a change that may be here to stay, but it’s bad news for merchants and consumers alike, especially those still struggling to recover from the economic impact of COVID-19. The reason is that credit card networks and the big banks charge merchants a “swipe” fee, averaging about two percent...

  • Sermonette: Aug. 9, 2021

    Pr. Jeff Halvorson|Aug 9, 2021

In the name of our Father, greetings to one and all. “Hot enough for you”? How many times have we said or heard that this year? Quite a few I imagine. Perhaps for many of us, and I include myself, who are too young to remember the 1930's, this recent spate of high temperatures and accompanying lack of rain seems ominous. Just a few weeks ago, I heard a farmer mention that this is the worst crop he's ever had. We can see from the road as we drive around the area, pastures never really greened up this year and there is little hay to be had....

    K.C. Gardner Jr.|Aug 9, 2021

According to the April 22, 1904 “Transcript,” because of the amount of water running in the James River, there were fears that the dam built the previous fall, east of the island, might be washed away. Almost a foot of water was running over it. Recently, Helen Oliver and Dr. T.H. MacLachlan of McHenry were married; they would be home at McHenry after April 25. For the previous two weeks, W.A. Coleman, proprietor of the Hubbard-Doss ranch southeast of New Rockford, had been in town, after re...

  • Tree Talk: Oaks

    Gerri Makay|Aug 9, 2021

"Mighty oaks from little acorns grow..." This 14th century English proverb inspires us never to give up, and to remember that great things do indeed come from small beginnings. While there are many species of oaks across the country, the only species native to North Dakota is bur oak, also known as Mossycup oak. Bur oak is easily identified by its distinctive leathery, tannin-filled leaves with rounded lobes and thick, corky bark. It is these adaptive features that have enabled oaks to endure...
