  • 4-H members show at annual Achievement Days

    Jul 19, 2021

Brand new to Eddy County 4-H this year was the 4-H Sheep Lease Program. This program offers 4-H members who may not otherwise have an opportunity to participate in a livestock enterprise with a way to carry out a livestock project. The sheep were housed in the 4-H livestock barn at the Eddy County Fairgrounds (as seen in the background of the photo at left). As this program is geared towards bringing youth a bit of the farm life, each 4-Her participating was expected to do some chores. They...

  • COVID-19 case count zeroes out in Eddy

    Amy Wobbema|Jul 19, 2021

You could say the coronavirus has flatlined. As of Wednesday, July 14, Eddy County had gone 44 days without one single reported case of COVID-19. Since the pandemic began, a total of 470 cases of the virus have been reported in Eddy County, and six people have died. That means 20.55% of the population have had confirmed positive cases in the past 16 months. Eddy County Public Health Nurse Danette Schmid said Tuesday that her office has not conducted any COVID-19 testing since early June....

    Amy Wobbema|Jul 19, 2021

Students and staff at Oberon Elementary School will come back to school in a new space on Aug. 25. The new 18,000 sq. ft. school under construction on the north end of Oberon will replace the town's 100-year-old brick tri-level schoolhouse. Groundbreaking took place in Oct. 2020, and workers managed to pour the concrete in late November. It wasn't until January, however, that the steel trusses and studs arrived on site, a full 60 days later than scheduled, due to pandemic supply issues. Now,...

  • Meet the Cast: "Life Could be a Dream" Part III

    Jul 19, 2021

He's the only North Dakotan on the DPRCA stage this summer. Grand Forks native Drew Relling is entering his junior year at North Dakota State University, and he's ready to reprise the role of Duke Henderson in "Life Could Be a Dream." Duke is the new guy from the wrong side of the tracks, and a natural singing whiz. He works for Big Stuff Auto, the group's new sponsor, and he is added to the fledgling Dreamers group to turn it into a proper quartet. Duke is definitely the new alpha male, and...

  • Oberon Oracles: July 19, 2021

    Linda Madson|Jul 19, 2021

I have not submitted Oberon news for three weeks, as we were visiting friends and relatives in San Diego and Escondido. We attended our great-granddaughter, Jenna Madson’s graduation open house at her home in Escondido, and celebrated Father's Day at our friend's home in Point Loma. We were also the guests of Roger and Laurie Benham in Point Loma, while we were in California. Carrie Prince, Cathy Caulfield and Melodie Madson, and Dave and I, flew to San Diego on June 15. Carrie and Melodie returned to North Dakota on June 29 as scheduled,...

  • Sheyenne News: July 19, 2021

    Patti Clifton|Jul 19, 2021

Jeff and Denise Labrensz enjoyed the 150th anniversary of Campbell, Minn., this past weekend. Denise attended school there for her 12 years of education. They both enjoyed visiting with family and friends, watching a great parade and touring the school. An interesting fact about the school; it is Campbell-Tintah as of the fall of 1972, and over the years has had sports co-ops with Fairmount, N.D., and currently with Rosholt, S.D. They are now the Tri-State Tigers and participate in the North Dakota High School Athletic Association. The last...

  • Internet censorship: The real monopoly threat

    Thomas Knapp|Jul 19, 2021

"If [Donald] Trump and [Bernie] Sanders take the same position on Big Tech censorship," David Catron writes at The American Spectator, "the issue deserves serious attention." He's right, but in pretty much the opposite of the way he intends. When the mainstream "right" and "left" agree on anything, that's almost always a blazing neon sign warning us that our freedoms are under threat. Catron (and Trump and Sanders) want the U.S. government to seize control of social media platforms, and dictate...

  • RVing trend good for civility

    Tom Purcell|Jul 19, 2021

It’s an old dream of mine and I just may do it: Buy a travel trailer and live on the American road for weeks at a time. Recreational vehicle living is a growing trend, particularly for younger people, who, post-Covid, prefer to work at home instead of commuting to their company’s office building. Thanks to technology, your “home office” can now be in an RV parked next to a rushing creek in the middle of nowhere. I’ve been critical of the downsides of digital innovation, which has...

  • Congressional term limits: Light from the 22nd Amendment

    David Adler|Jul 19, 2021

The debate surrounding proposals for term limits on members of Congress would benefit from a reminder of the reasoning behind the 22nd Amendment, which imposed a two-term limit on the presidency. That amendment, ratified in 1951, is now 70 years old. Although small pockets of voices advocating its repeal can be heard from time to time, polls show that Americans, with good reason, believe strongly in the merits of that fundamental change in the Constitution. Constitutional history can be a useful guide in a nation’s decision-making process....

  • Sermonette: July 19, 2021

    Rhianne Bowman|Jul 19, 2021

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.” Psalms 62:5-8 NIV “Be still.” That is what the Lord has been telling me the last few days. The last week and a half has been a whirlwind. I’ve been traveling and going constantly, I’ve barely had a moment to sit down. I was driving...

  • Learning to see through our spiritual eyes

    Billy Holland|Jul 19, 2021

The life of David in the Bible is one of the more popular stories in the Christian faith. Of all the individuals other than Christ, I would guess there have been more messages about him than any other character within the word of God. There is a huge difference between the way we observe and judge with our natural senses, and the way God perceives everything through His perfect spiritual wisdom, and the key to our success is learning to see as God sees. We begin our story in I Samuel, where Samu...

  • Archival Anecdotes: The Joys of Furry Friends

    Rachel Brazil|Jul 19, 2021

Last fall I wrote about dogs and the role they played in the families of early settlers in Eddy County. After recently writing about friendships, I was reminded that canines (and felines) can offer some pretty valuable relationships. It has long been recognized that animals can help calm and soothe people during times of distress, and even lower blood pressure, but there are more benefits to caring for a pet, a fact that the folks pictured here seem to understand. Pets can alter our moods and...

He was charged with driving under suspension, and also cited for possession of marijuana, an infraction. Jim Miller|Jul 19, 2021

Dear Savvy Senior, I’m 58 years old and working on a plan for my retirement. I’ve read that I need to check my Social Security statement every year to validate its accuracy. How do I go about doing this? Planning Ahead Dear Planning, Checking your official Social Security statement every year is a smart move to make sure your posted earnings are correct, which will ensure you get the benefits you’re entitled to. But most Americans don’t do it. In fact, most U.S workers have never even...
