  • Local woman opens home and heart- launches animal sanctuary

    Rachel Brazil|Jul 15, 2019

There's been a buzz in the barnyard. The ducks are quacking and the geese a-honking. The horses stomp and whinny, a baby goat bleats, and the llama makes whatever noise it is that llamas make- apparently a kind of grunt. These sounds might be reminiscent of a beloved children's storybook, complete with dramatic animal personalities to go along with a playful plot. However, this is a different kind of a story, and it takes place on a very real place just southwest of New Rockford. Hawkes...

  • Where are they now? Adversity, athletics and appraisals define Vorland

    Kristi Frahm|Jul 15, 2019

Undoubtedly, Alicia Vorland loves nature in all of its forms. Many brilliant photos of landscapes, sunsets and flowers crowd the camera icon on her phone. She eagerly showed me these pictures at her lovely home on the west side of town, as she and I enjoyed a cup of coffee and a delicious homemade rhubarb dessert, my portion noticeably larger than hers. This is the charm of Alicia: a comfortable conversation about her appreciative regard for outdoor beauty coupled with rhubarb dessert for...

  • ROKU brings country-western music back

    LLoyd Omdahl|Jul 15, 2019

Whenever my son comes with a black box, I know I’m going to be pressured into a new electronic gimmick the learning of which, considering a human’s normal lifespan, can’t be amortized in my schedule. And I’ll have to learn more than I want to know about something. “What’s ROKU?” I asked him, guessing it was probably a Chinese soup or a new dog food. Well, the little black box added multiple channels to my already overloaded TV, meaning I would have to add two more hours of TV watching to amortiz...

  • Letter to the editor- July 15, 2019

    Jul 15, 2019

I wanted to say 'Thank You' to all the people of New Rockford, they helped organize all of the events for the Fourth of July this year. I helped run the steam tractor in the parade. I also brought along my daughter and girlfriend to attend the celebration. I was truly amazed at how much was going on. Usually in Bowman county where I live they have a fireworks display at the dam and that’s the extent of it. This year for several reasons they were having no fireworks. I was dismayed and looked on City of New Rockford website and found the list o... Full story

  • About men, women, interruptors and the post-woke age

    Christine Flowers|Jul 15, 2019

When a woman keeps talking over a man who refuses to listen and is trying to interrupt her, that is at most an annoyance and a breach of courtesy. If the woman and the man happen to be in a romantic or familial relationship, it is also grounds for some flowers and a nice dinner. It does not qualify the woman for a Bronze Star, the Nobel Prize in Physics (figuring out how to avoid a nuclear explosion) or the Oprah Winfrey Seal of Approval. Unfortunately, in the wake of "woke," we are to believe...

  • Photo ID is obsolete and unnecessary. Facial recognition technology makes it dangerous.

    Thomas Knapp|Jul 15, 2019

In mid-May, San Francisco became the first American city to ban the use of facial recognition surveillance technology by its police department and other city agencies. That's a wise and ethical policy, as a July 7 piece at the “Washington Post” proves. Citing documents gathered by Georgetown Law researchers, the “Post” reports that at least two federal agencies, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, have – for years – mined state photo ID databases to populate their own facial recognition databases....

"Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20   The book of Proverbs is a book of advice from Solomon, to his son. The son is not named, but presumably Solomon desires for his all of his sons, including Rehoboam who will be king once he is gone, to have the wisdom to lead well. Amongst the many nuggets of wisdom, is this little jewel. Solomon encourages his son to pay attention to who he surrounds himself with. He points to the truth that our personal wisdom is revealed by who we cho...

  • Dakota Datebook- Freakish Hail Storm and Cold Day in Beulah

    Jul 15, 2019

Freakish Hail Storm by Tessa Sandstrom July 16, 2019— It was 1951, and farmers of Emmons and McIntosh Counties were optimistic about the year’s crops. It looked to be one of the best crops they had ever had, but it was late at night on this date when many of these crops were pummeled by ice chunks the size of a man’s fist. The storm, reported to be 10 miles deep and 40 miles long, was a sporadic one, too. The Ashley Tribune reported that this “freakish” hail storm “oddly ... lifted here and there, sparing numerous fields, while others near...

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 15, 2019

There’s just something about early morning in the country when the birds are just starting to sing, the light is soft and the opportunity to see wildlife in my yard is greater. I love writing in the morning but I’ve been feeling a new pull to get outside and take some pictures, so I’ve been doing some reading on photography websites. Melinda Smith, of the Digital Photography School, says there is just something about taking pictures in the magical morning light that makes her heart sing. Smith...
