    Amy Wobbema|Jul 13, 2020

The "grand reopening" planned for the following week was not to be, as Gov. Burgum called off schools statewide on Sunday, March 15, the day before the doors of the new space...

  • A cool idea whose time has come again

    Tom Purcell|Jul 13, 2020

I’m getting a whole-house attic fan installed this week – just like the one my father had installed in my childhood home – and I cannot wait to cool my house using his old-time methods. I have nothing against air conditioning, mind you. I run my central unit on summer’s hottest days. I can’t imagine how unpleasant life was before A/C brought relief. Willis Haviland Carrier invented air conditioning in 1902. Initially used for industrial purposes, it was being used for comfort by the mid-1920s...

  • On Purpose: Our grass is greener than we think

    Billy Holland|Jul 13, 2020

I really appreciate readers who send me emails and even hand-written letters, they are truly an encouragement. Actually, I received a wonderful letter the other day by a gentleman from South Carolina who had recently lost his wife and he said one of these columns touched him deeply. My topic was about how God’s eye is always on the sparrow, and this reminded him of a precious memory that he and his wife had experienced many years ago. He sent along some photos and it was just a very kind e...

  • Archival Anecdotes: Hotel Mattson

    Rachel Brazil|Jul 13, 2020

History is an inextricable element of the work done at Transcript Publishing. We often find ourselves consulting our archives or the Eddy County Museum to confirm facts and enrichen our stories. Now, after moving to 817 Central Avenue, a whole new history is emerging. This is the sixth home the Transcript has found in downtown New Rockford, and its history is just as rich as the others. In fact, the land upon which the new building sits was the home of Hotel Mattson as early as 1894. According...

  • Tales of a N.D. tradition: Transcript Publishing and Dakota Edge Outdoors to publish "Big Buck Book"

    Nick Simonson|Jul 13, 2020

My weekly column, Our Outdoors, has chronicled the recent history of hunting, angling and my experiences, as well as myriad misadventures and sometimes-successful outings in the wild for the past two decades. It's my hope that it continues to entertain and educate for the next two decades, and maybe a few more after that if I'm lucky enough to still be able to share my take on what to do – and sometimes more importantly, what not to do – to get more from the increasingly precious and lim...

  • Anglers should keep fish caught in deep water

    Jul 13, 2020

North Dakota Game and Fish Department fisheries personnel encourage anglers to keep fish caught from depths of more than 25 feet, rather than practice catch-and-release. Scott Gangl, Game and Fish fisheries management section leader, said while catch-and-release is often encouraged under the right conditions, fish reeled in from this depth will likely die if released. “Fish caught from deep water have a lower chance of surviving after you release them because of the extreme change in water pressure,” Gangl said. Change in water pressure wil...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: Fish regulations

    Doug Leier|Jul 13, 2020

Fisheries managers often hear from anglers who fish in, say, Minnesota and elsewhere, and wonder why specific regulations are applied in those states, but not North Dakota. One of the more frequent conversations involves slot limits. North Dakota doesn’t currently have any slot-limit regulations, and most fisheries managers will tell you that a slot limit is likely the most misunderstood of fish size restrictions. Most anglers refer to a slot limit as a harvestable size range, say, from 14 to 2...
