  • Journalists aren't so different from our readers

    John L Micek|Jul 9, 2018

If you stay in the news business long enough, you’re inevitably going to run into a reader who has a grievance - sometimes legitimate, sometimes not - against their hometown newspaper. Sometimes it’s because they feel they’ve been portrayed unfairly in a story. Or they feel like a reporter or editor did not give a sufficient enough airing of their views. Or sometimes it’s because they don’t like the font of the baseball box scores. I have been on the receiving end of those complaints. And it can occasionally be profoundly unpleasant. But these...

  • A proposal: Cut the Court

    Thomas Knapp|Jul 9, 2018

Well, here we go again. On June 27, U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement, effective July 31. Cue crisis, as defined by President John F. Kennedy's inaccurate characterization of the Chinese analog: "Two characters, one representing danger and the other, opportunity." Democrats and Republicans have, for 30 years, alternated between anticipation and fear, depending on which party was in position to choose Kennedy's successor. As a "swing vote" -- reliably tied to neither party's policy agenda -- since the...

For years, America's high corporate tax rate forced companies to stash their money in overseas accounts. How times have changed. The Bureau of Economic Analysis recently reported that $305.6 billion has returned to the U.S. from overseas accounts. Based on empirical evidence, the reduced tax burden has encouraged job creators to invest in American workers...

    Dr. Billy Holland|Jul 9, 2018

Children are a wonderful blessing! How exciting it is to hold a little baby and imagine the person they will become along with all the great things they will experience and accomplish. No one is perfect or has all the answers,...
