  • The Democrats' debate could have been worse

    Michael Reagan|Jul 8, 2019

Making Sense Expectations could not have been lower going into round one of the Democrat Party's ridiculously overcrowded presidential debate in Miami. Maybe that's why it turned out to be a decently watchable debate. It was no "Games of Thrones" finale, but it could have been much, much worse. NBC had that embarrassing audio glitch at the halfway point, which actually turned out to be entertaining. But NBC's all-star moderators - Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie, Jose Diaz-Balart, Chuck Todd and e...

  • Buy a home! You'll benefit - but be miserable

    Tom Purcell|Jul 8, 2019

Why do I want more Americans to buy homes? Because misery loves company. The Wall Street Journal reports most American renters believe homeownership is financially out of their reach - only 24 percent say it's "extremely likely that they would ever own a home, 11 percentage points lower than four years ago," according to a Freddie Mac survey - and that isn't good for our country. Look, homeownership brings many benefits. For starters, homeowners' net worth is higher than renters' - for the simpl...

  • Letter to the Editor: Be aware of the symptoms of opioid overdose

    Jul 8, 2019

Overdoses are happening everywhere, all over the country. In our current society, the streets are filled to the brim with ultra-strong heroin that’s often mixed with fentanyl and a multitude of its analogues. This makes life saving efforts, like Narcan, futile when trying to reverse an overdose. The thing is, overdoses don’t just happen in the bathroom or bedroom at home. In fact, many people who overdose do so in public areas. Overdoses can happen in the grocery store, in the car, at a shopping mall… just about anywhere. Overdoses happe...

  • Thinking About Health: Caregiving costs are not just for the elderly

Trudy Lieberman, Rural Health News Service|Jul 8, 2019

Is the U.S. ready for a discussion about paying for caregiving, an increasingly vexing and costly problem for a growing number of Americans? The answer may be “yes.” It has become obvious that long-term-care insurance is not the answer to paying for nursing home and other kinds of care for the elderly. Sales for this product have been declining, the result of sky-high premiums, rate increases, and the difficulty of qualifying for a policy if you’re sick. But the elderly are not the only Americans needing care. At the other end of the age spect...

  • Living on Purpose: Choosing to spend time with God

    Dr. Billy Holland|Jul 8, 2019

Those of us who are married have learned the closer we are to our spouse the more sacred and meaningful our love becomes. When we listen, laugh, cry, reveal our most secret thoughts, hopes and concerns, this is an important part of learning to trust and know them. Likewise, this is also how we grow in our personal bond and adoration with our Lord. We come to Christ with as much sincerity as a human can have as we lay our head on his chest and are surrounded in his perfect peace that passes all...

According to a recent study published in the journal Science Advances, people aged 65 and older are almost four times more likely to share fake news on social media than younger people. • Eyes that see the good in things- July 8, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 8, 2019

Last Monday, I was driving to Carrington to pick up some dog and cat food and found myself looking at the crops in the fields. After all, I wouldn’t be a true North Dakotan if I didn’t do a little crop checking, would I? It had seemed to me that with the cold spring, the crops were behind but I noticed that the heat has caused quite a growth spurt in some of those fields. I had assumed that the corn would not be able to meet that “knee-high by the Fourth of July” stage. I was surprised when I...

  • Dakota Datebook:Finding Fen-Phen

    Merry Helm|Jul 8, 2019

July 8, 2019 — It was on this date in 1997 that CNN broke the news that the miracle combination of diet drugs known as fen-phen was causing leakage in users’ heart valves. What many don’t know is that the first person to figure it out was a cardiac sonographer at Fargo’s MeritCare named Pam Ruff. According to an article for Science News, Ruff noted two unusual echo-cardiograms in December 1994. Among the heart-structure images she created, she found leaky valves for two relatively young women– a disorder that was rare for anyone under the...

  • Post 25 gets victory in latest rival contest

    Erik Gjovik|Jul 8, 2019

Big hits ruled the day in the latest chapter of the New Rockford- Carrington diamond rivalry, but, as it seems to go lately in the series, it was Post 25 who got the last salvo. As he did in the Region 3 championship during the spring season in extra innings, Payton Smith hit the go-ahead double for Carrington in an eventual 8-6 defeat for the Black Sox at Jim Johnson Park which effectively gave visitors a straight path to the top overall seed in the upcoming District 4 Tourney. In spite of a...
