  • History of New Rockford: May 23, 2022

    K.C. Gardner Jr.|May 23, 2022

To continue from last week: On Jan. 16, 1905, W.C. Hayes died. He was born in New York State and lived in Pennsylvania 10 years before moving to Dakota Territory in 1882, arriving at Bartlett via the Great Northern Railway. He traveled across country to the southwest and homesteaded on land near Tiffany, where he resided until the previous three or four years when he lived in New Rockford. [He was the court house janitor from at least 1901-Nov. 1904]. He was a Mason and had joined the AOUW...

    Jim Miller|May 23, 2022

Dear Savvy Senior, My doctor recently suggested I start a walking program to help get my weight and blood pressure under control, but I’ve never exercised much and am 66. Can you recommend some tips? Hate to Exercise Dear Hate, You should follow your doctor’s orders. • Rockets soar at Lloyd Memorial Meet

    Kyrie O'Connor|May 23, 2022

The New Rockford-Sheyenne varsity and junior high tracksters battled the wind on Saturday, May 14 in Fessenden at the Lloyd Memorial Meet. The wind kept most athletes from finishing their events in state-qualifying times. But wind didn't seem to slow down NR-S track star, Kelsie Belquist. Although Belquist has state-qualified in eight events alone, she continues to better her times second by second. Belquist competed in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 4x200-meter relay. Belquist...

  • A hole new ball game

    Kyrie O'Connor|May 23, 2022

New Rockford-Sheyenne's golf team is nearing the end of their season. The golf team at NR-S has always been made up of only a select few students. This year, a total of six NR-S golfers are on the team; Jackson Schumacher, Dashyl Bichler, Kage Walford, Bennett Meier, Shaun Reimche and Jacob Louters. All six of these student athletes are from ninth grade and under. The golf team also donned a new coach for golf; that being John Christiansen. Even though these golfers may be young, they are still...

  • Rockets girls' 4x200-meter relay team headed to state track meet

    Kyrie O'Connor|May 23, 2022

On the road, yet again. The New Rockford-Sheyenne track and field team traveled to Rugby to compete in the Hanneman Memorial track meet. With only a few track meets left before the state meet on May 26-28, track athletes have minimal time to earn state-qualifications. With a beautiful day, with only a hint of North Dakota wind, the Rockets girls' 4x200-meter relay team was able to secure, yet another, state qualification. The 4x200-meter relay team was made up of Lucy Meier, Katie Allmaras,...

From May 13-17, the Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox played their final four games of the regular season, and were unable to end their losing streak. Up first was a rematch with the Loboes of LaMoure-Litchville/Marion on Friday, May 13. In their previous matchup, the Loboes shutout SNR and sent them home early via the 10-run mercy rule. Unfortunately for the Black Sox, they were unable to avoid the same fate last Friday. In the first three innings alone, the Loboes scored eight runs, while their...

  • Our Outdoors: Four Weeks

    Nick Simonson|May 23, 2022

In good springs and bad, snowy ones and warm ones, no matter how the kids come out of the final day of competition in the USA High School Clay Target League's regular season, it's the four weeks in between today's end of the often chilly, windy, and trying eight weeks that make all the difference ahead of the state tournament. Whether with the first team in southwest Minnesota I helmed nearly a decade ago, or with the six pack of schools I coach along with 75 other adults now in central North...

  • The Peluso Report: Explosive Fishing

    Mike Peluso|May 23, 2022

Boom goes the dynamite if you are looking for action! Early this spring I was questioning if we had a population of smaller fish. Well, I'm here to tell you we do! Unfortunately, I fear these are older fish finding very little to eat and not growing much. The bigger fish in the system seem to be doing just fine. Between herring, smelt, white bass, drum and definitely some of these smaller walleyes we are catching the big girls have plenty of food. The smaller fish, not so much. It is my opinion...
