Every small town has "characters." These people are those whom everyone recognizes, perhaps because of their quirky personalities or their solid reputations. New Rockford has its share of characters, and David Bymoen, better known as "Tubby," is one of the most famous. It was highly probable that Tubby would grow up with quite a sense of humor after receiving his nickname at the tender age of 2 from his uncle "Swede" Ekrem. • Does North Dakota need another addiction?

    Lloyd Omdahl|May 14, 2018

Do we have nicotine? Yes, as much as we can smoke. Do we have opioids? Yes, enough to run us broke. Do we have alcohol? Yes, an unlimited supply. Do we have beer? Yes, we will never go dry. It will be another addiction opportunity for those who missed the others. Before discussing the proposal, let’s make a clear disti...

    Joe Guzzardi|May 14, 2018

The Mexican and Canadian governments are pushing the White House to step up the North American Free Trade Agreement’s renegotiation pace and to conclude talks in May. Dubbed NAFTA 2.0, President Trump must proceed cautiously lest he open up the U.S. labor market to a new flood of employment-authorized visa holders. NAFTA, which went into force on January 1, 1994, created the Treaty NAFTA (TN) visa, a nonimmigrant temporary employment-based visa through which an unlimited inflow of allegedly h...

  • Who to crucify? Trump or Barabbas?

    Michael Reagan|May 14, 2018

The Trump Haters hate on and on and... The deranged hatred of Donald Trump by the left and the media is so strong it is never going to stop. If they had the chance, I actually think the Democrats would put a crown of thorns on Trump’s head, make him carry his own cross and send him to be crucified. On national TV. With Rachel Maddow, Chuck Todd and Jimmy Kimmel doing the play-by-play. Of course, if the Democrat mob was given the choice between letting Barabbas the murderer or Trump the p...

  • Sermonette - May 14, 2018

    Rev. Doug Nemitz|May 14, 2018

In the spring of 1971, I sat down to write my last will and testament— no, not that last will and testament. This was a silly little exercise that many graduating seniors did, in which they explained what they were leaving to their high school alma mater and the underclassmen left behind. These “wills” were mimeographed and stapled together and distributed through the school that last week of classes. It’s been so long that I don’t remember everything I left to everyone, but I do remember a few things. I left my long, consecutive string of tard...

  • Trying to make sense of it all

    Dr. Billy Holland|May 14, 2018

To be honest, I probably spend too much time watching and reading the news. I feel the need to keep up with the latest developments so that I can at least be aware about current events. However, many times I find myself being absorbed in an ocean of information that is not only meaningless but is also negatively affecting my mental and emotional state of being. I’m reminded that I have no power or influence to change the decisions that are being made including the declining direction of the w...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: May 14, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|May 14, 2018

It could have started when I was watching the Norwegians rule the day in the Winter Olympics and the Norwegian athletes were doing so well. It could also be that my siblings and I are planning a Norwegian 60th wedding anniversary for my parents.
