New Rockford residents will get a curbside pickup opportunity this month. The city commission took up the issue at its May 3 meeting, where Public Works Superintendent Bruce Hirchert recommended that Clean-Up Days be held the week of May 17, with curbside pickup limited to tires, appliances and furniture only. The county commission acted upon a request from Auditor Patty Williams, who suggested that the mask mandate in the courthouse be lifted. On the evening of Tuesday, May 4, The New Rockford Fire Department was called to a field in Munster Township west of town. Ed O'Connor was plowing when the tractor he was operating started on fire. O'Connor was able to escape without injury and snap the above photo. By the time firemen extinguished the flames, all that remained of the tractor was a mess of mangled metal (left). Figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that North Dakota’s population hit a record high of 779,094 residents on April 1, 2020, and the state had the fourth-highest growth rate in the nation by percentage, growing by 15.8% from 2010 to 2020. Preliminary county data released this past week, however, shows that Eddy County’s population has dropped over the past 10 years. The New Rockford-Sheyenne Track team traveled to Oakes on Monday, May 3 to compete in the Oakes Open. The 4x800 Relay team for New Rockford-Sheyenne consists of Kelsie Belquist, Ava Peterson, Katie Allmaras and Chloe Heinz. They received first place in the 4x800 Relay with a time of 11:10.31. Heinz also competed in the 1,600-meter run and the 400-meter dash. Sheyenne-New Rockford played in windy conditions at Steele on Friday, April 30, losing 4-2 to regional opponent Kidder County/Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter. The New Rockford-Sheyenne fourth through sixth grade volleyball team ended their season on April 27 in a match up against Maddock. The youth volleyball season began back on March 7th. The girls practiced twice a week, similar to club volleyball practices. The Rockets played a total of eight games throughout the season. The team consisted of 19 girls in grades 4-6. Rodney (Rocky) J. Ehni, 68, passed away on April 8 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester Minn. He was born on June 25, 1952 in Fargo N.D. to Daniel and Marie Ehni and was the oldest of five boys. After graduating high school from Fessenden N.D., he obtained a bachelor's and a master's degree in Agricultural Economics. Construction is underway on the long-anticipated Red River Valley Water Supply Project! The water supply project is a concerted effort to ensure that public water systems in central and eastern North Dakota have adequate water supplies, especially during periods of moderate and severe drought. North Dakota State University Extension in Foster and Eddy counties, local banks, and credit unions partnered with schools in Carrington and New Rockford to provide a lesson to first grade students on earning, spending and saving. The 67th Legislative session adjourned about midnight on Thursday evening. The session was stressful to say the least, as we worked through the restrictions forced upon us by the pandemic, but we were still able to complete the work we were entrusted to do by all of you.
