  • Give me a break

    Corey Seymour|May 7, 2018

Last week I had the great fortune to be able to take a proper vacation with my family for the first time in what seemed like forever. Now that I’m back to work, I’ve been trying to figure out just what it is that made this time off so magical. Was it the warmer weather we headed off to? I’m sure that helped, but we’ve had warm-weather vacations before that weren’t this restorative. A break from my usual onslaught of emails and work deadlines? Yes, but ditto. The easy availability of chicken n...

  • All eyes on Supreme Court with Trump v. Hawaii

    Joe Guzzardi|May 7, 2018

Observing the swamp during the last few weeks, one trend is clear: federal courts are all-powerful, and even though the judges are appointed, not elected, they have the final say in legislative issues. Nevertheless, lower court judges don’t have the right to steal American sovereignty or usurp presidential powers including those the Executive Branch has over immigration. Two recent examples: in Sessions v. Dimaya, the Supreme Court struck down a congressional statute that mandates criminal a...

  • Sermonette - May 7, 2018

    Rev. Doug Nemitz|May 7, 2018

As I was praying about, meditating and reflecting upon, asking questions about Sunday’s assigned second reading (1 John 5:1-6), a particular part of the text caught my attention. It was 1 John 5:6a: “This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood.” While these words may seem strange at first, they do have some relevance to our modern time. The early Christians were engaged in a theological battle with the gnostics. The gnostics thought that the material world was evil and t...

Success is a popular subject and an exciting attitude that fuels the imagination and drives our motivation. The fervent desire to succeed seems to be embedded within our DNA and I see nothing wrong with an honest inspiration to accomplish certain goals. Even the Bible talks about “pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” and refers to winning and being victorious as a spiritual blessing in accordance with God’s perfect will. Yes, success can be satis...

    Allison Lindgren|May 7, 2018

Did you remember Mother’s Day is just around the corner? Not this Sunday but the next, on May 13. While the Mother’s Day that we celebrate is a recent development in the world of holidays, the basic idea goes back to ancient mythology—all the way back to the long-ago civilizations of the Greeks and Romans. The Greeks paid homage to Cybele, the mother figure of their gods, and the Romans dedicated an annual spring festival to the mother of their gods. In 16th century England, there was a speci...

    Merry Helm|May 7, 2018

May 10, 2018 — Today is anniversary of the only official riot in North Dakota state history. It started innocently. In April of 1969, NDSU student body president Chuck Stroup couldn’t afford to go to Florida with his sister for spring break. So he came up with a cheap alternative and took it to NDSU’s school paper, "The Spectrum." He was planning a gathering near his hometown of Hazen to be held the following month. He called it “Zip to Zap” and took out a classified ad. A responsive front-page article about the event set things in motion. I...
