  • River rapids run

    Nathan Price|May 1, 2023

The James River in New Rockford is no longer contained within its banks. As of Wednesday, April 26, water had inched onto backyards along 5th Ave. North, and some lower-lying fields had become inundated. Water from the James River had also overcome the access road to the reservoir. Thanks to higher temperatures eating away at a heavier-than-average snowpack, rivers throughout North Dakota have risen considerably, leading to flood emergencies and sandbagging efforts in numerous areas. On April...

  • Legislative Report: May 1, 2023

    Senator Jerry Klein|May 1, 2023

It's day 70. We are down to the last few days. We are hoping that we will be done by day 75. A lot of committees were working this past Saturday toward compromises both on policy and appropriations. Our budget, as of today, is still a couple of hundred million in the red. There are several what I would call earmarks still in some of these bills. Much discussion will be about what is genuinely a need versus what may be a want. We will see. As of today, there is an agreement on a tax package. It includes lowering all the income tax brackets, r...

With home prices at historic highs and interest rates double what they were a year before, first-time home buyers searching for a place to call their own are in the grip of a squeeze that shows no signs of loosening any time soon. With those high costs, and the additional increases in overall inflation, the number of homes on the market affordable for lower-...

In its first and only impeachment trial of a Supreme Court justice, the U.S. Senate in 1805 acquitted Samuel Chase of charges against him, a historic decision that raises profoundly important questions about judicial independence and accountability and illuminates the challenges facing Justice Clarence Thomas. American politics, fraught with heated partisan divisions, had reached a fever pitch in the early 19th century when Justice Chase was brought before the bar of the Senate. Why was John the Bap-tist arrested? Do you remember why John the Baptist was arrested? Much of John the Baptist’s life and ministry is remembered by most people. His miraculous birth, his wild “Florida-man” style of preaching, his baptism of his cousin Jesus and his final beheading are known by most people who attend church. Over the past few weeks I have shared insights into the lives and contributions of folks who helped charter the Eddy County Museum. It turns out that some of those early members made their contributions in pairs, like Alice and Joe Rindt. If I were to go back to 1966 in the meeting minutes, I imagine we could learn a lot about the dynamics the couple contributed to the board, but that is far more archiving than I'm able to do at...
