  • Can we possibly laugh about seasonal allergies?

    Danny Tyree|Apr 26, 2021

Tree huggers, are you contemplating a Zoom meeting with Mr. Elm instead? Yes, this is dedicated to the millions of you who share my susceptibility to seasonal allergies. (Seasonal allergies? Yes, "When is allergy season?" is a popular Google question. I don't mean to be ungrateful for fleeting symptom interruptions around Christmas; but that question is as pollyannaish as asking "When is double-chin season?" or "When is robocall season?") Hopefully, this column will also have a little something...

  • The high price of a modest roof

    Tom Purcell|Apr 26, 2021

The cost of construction materials has gone through the roof – if you can still afford a roof, which isn’t very affordable right now. All I wanted to do was build a modest roof over my modest deck at my modest house. But a year of government pandemic policies, and the law of unintended consequences, have foiled my little dream by driving up the price of lumber. According to Fortune, the costs of items like plywood and 2x4s increased 193 percent since last spring 2020 and are not done spi...

  • Biden's Supreme Court Commission is about one thing

    Carl Golden|Apr 26, 2021

Disregard the policy, the law school lecture language, the obfuscation, and don’t be misled by the bureaucratic psychobabble. President Joe Biden’s executive order, the creation of a commission to study the U.S. Supreme Court is about one thing – court packing, expanding the nine-member court by an as yet undetermined number, whose only qualification will be a pledge to carry out the Democratic Party’s left wing agenda. The order is another in the administration’s inch by excruciating inch leftward, attempt to mollify the party’s vocal progr...

  • Sermonette: Who I Am

    Joe Greiner|Apr 26, 2021

Identity. It’s one of major topics of conversation in our world. We debate who can define our identity. We debate the different kinds of identity. We debate how others are supposed to respond to our identity. Who’s male and who’s female? Do I get to determine for myself, or is there an absolute measure? If I can define for myself, at which age am I mature enough to draw that conclusion? What race am I? Can I choose which ones define me and which ones don’t? What about babies in utero/fetuses? Are they human? Who gets to decide that? All of thes...

  • Volleyball awards handed out

    Sara Myhre|Apr 26, 2021

If I could think of one word to describe our season it would be "Resilience," meaning – the ability to recover quickly from difficulties. I felt like there were a lot of difficulties for our team during this past season with COVID. All of our tournaments were canceled and few of our games, as well. And who can forget our 16 days of quarantine. There was a lot of disappointment, but the one thing I admired about each of the athletes was their attitude when we got back on the court and p...

  • Black Sox sweep HWC Hornets at home

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 26, 2021

Sheyenne-New Rockford pitcher Alex Harrison didn't have to worry about his fielders working too hard behind him. Fourteen strikeouts will do that, no question. Harrison scattered three runs over six innings of work, and Evan Ulrich worked the final three outs for the save to give SNR their first varsity victory of the spring, a 6-3 triumph over the HWC Hornets in New Rockford on April 16. The Hornet hurler, Tyson Tipton, was nearly up to the task in matching Harrison until the sixth inning,...

Three of those were caught looking for a 1-2-3 first inning, and the Sox...

  • Archival Anecdotes: Whatever hat pins, hat pins

    Rachel Brazil|Apr 26, 2021

Hat pins were once a commonly used tool that was both beautiful in design and strategic in function. The pins usually measured eight inches in length or more, and fulfilled one purpose- to secure a hat onto a woman's head. It was a useful and necessary tool, especially as hats increased in size, weight and texture. The way they worked was simple, passing through the hat and catching in a bun of hair underneath. Their practicality could not be overstated, as no one wanted their beautiful hat to...
