  • N.D. Senate Update for April 22, 2019

    Senator Joan Heckaman, District 23|Apr 22, 2019

We started the 62nd legislative day Monday, April 8. This week's report will be rather short considering that many, many bills are in Conference Committee and are in limbo. To report on any of them would be premature. This time of the session there is a lot of compromising and collaboration taking place, both in committees and in the halls. Lobbyists are still working to get amendments on bills or to get a specific piece of legislation passed or defeated. Currently most bills are out of regular committees except for the House and Senate Ethics...

  • Egg found by two boys with two clues

    Apr 22, 2019

Two boys went sniffin' around for the Chamber's golden Easter egg on Tuesday, April 16, and they just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Noah Wobbema and cousin Chaztin Wobbema set out after school on a hint from Noah's mom, Ann. She said that Monday's clue "Before the beginning" might have something to do with the railroad and/or the center of town. After all, New Rockford was built around the railroad more than 135 years ago. While searching a safe distance from the tracks...

  • Opinion: Kill the bill, not the income tax

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 22, 2019

That Legacy Fund sure has the legislature in a tizzy. They look at the balance in the fund, and its earnings over the past few years, and their heads spin. They even bring back proposals late in the session that were killed after thoughtful floor debate. Yes, I’m talking about the plan to use the Legacy Fund’s earnings to offset the income tax. The House's proposal would divert half of the Legacy Fund's earnings each two-year budget cycle to an “income tax rate reduction fund,” as long as the...

  • Opinion: Can democracy survive big money?

    LLoyd Omdahl|Apr 22, 2019

For the past several months, the political dialogue has been focused on the involvement of Russian operatives in the American democratic processes. Whether or not American politicians were involved in collusion has been the primary point of inquiry. Those who have suspected evil have talked liberally about these Russian activities undermining democracy. The Russians have been brilliant by applying their tactics to America’s great weakness— an electorate that is gullible because it lacks a con...

  • Opinion: Have you hugged a volunteer firefighter today?

    Danny Tyree|Apr 22, 2019

The tragic fire that engulfed Notre Dame Cathedral compels me to write about services that we take for granted, right up until the moment we suddenly need them ourselves. I have the utmost respect for professionals who decide to make a career of firefighting; but this week I will be focusing on the nation's volunteer fire departments, made up of citizens who work for free or a nominal amount or at least a written guarantee that all emergency calls will last long enough for their spouse to get...

  • Sermonette: Christ is risen!

    Rev. Doug Nemitz|Apr 22, 2019

In the tradition to which I belong, a typical Easter greeting might be something like this: “Christ is risen! Christ is risen, indeed! Alleluia!” I think it is wonderful to remind one another of this central, foundational fact upon which Christianity is built, especially on Easter. Jesus Christ is risen and we, too, will be raised from the dead. This is great news! As I reflect on one of the resurrection accounts in the Bible, I’m struck that Mary Magdalene came to Jesus’ tomb “early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark” (John...

  • Living on Purpose: Where I first saw the light

    Dr. Billy Holland|Apr 22, 2019

The cross is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world and rightly so; it represents mankind’s hope for eternal life. Does this sound religiously dogmatic? Maybe so, but how could any sincere Christian give reverence to Holy Week without referring to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ? Billy Graham is quoted as saying, “God proved his love on the cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the entire world, I love you.” To go a step further, the follo...

    Merry Helm|Apr 22, 2019

Old Maid Teachers? by Merry Helm April 24, 2019 — In April 1895, the “Minto Journal” proudly reported that the land office in Grand Forks had, in one week, recorded 69 people filing for land and 11 proving up, accounting for a total of 13,000 acres, almost all in Cavalier County. “There is no mistake about the meaning of this,” the article read. “It is clear that the last four excellent crops have given people confidence in this county. I heard one say, ‘We have no trouble in getting our bills settled promptly in Cavalier County.’ And...
