  • Cardinals roll late, send SNR Black Sox to second loss

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 19, 2021

Both Carrington and SNR's aces were dealing early, but once the Black Sox went to their bullpen, the Cardinals jumped at the opportunity. The visitors to Jim Johnson Field from down south 16 miles, got a 13-4 win in the opening game of region three play on Friday afternoon, April 9, and three players did the share of the damage in the books. Grady Shipman, Austin Trelstad and Ethan Buskness all had three hits to combine for nine of Carrington's 13 base knocks, with Shipman doubling twice and...

  • Sox struggle in first series, fall to F-S-H-P

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 19, 2021

The big inning, or in this case, two of them, came back to bite the SNR Blacksox hard in their opening game of the high school baseball campaign. In Hope on Thursday, April 8, Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page scored 13 of their 15 runs in the final two innings, erasing a three-run ‘Sox advantage’ after an inning and a half, and rolling to a 15-5 win for the Spartans. Seven different F-S-H-P batters had hits and RBIs, as Grant Ihry and Owen Zerface each rapped out two hits in the Spartans’ column....

  • Our Outdoors: Better Lucky Than Good

    Nick Simonson|Apr 19, 2021

I can't tell you what I was reaching for in the boat when I set my rod down. Likely, in the chill of the start to an otherwise perfect Saturday, it was the blue coffee tumbler I had borrowed from my mom, when meeting my brother and a buddy for a drift down my home flow of the Sheyenne River. It could have been one of the tiny, krystal flash jigs I had been taking from the small pile for the soft-biting walleyes we were pursuing, which had required me to downsize to that ultralight rod with...

  • ND Hunting & Fishing License Sales Rise Sharply

    Nick Simonson|Apr 19, 2021

Hunting and fishing license sales by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department (NDG&F) increased by more than 10 percent across the board in the most recent licensing year of Apr. 1 2020 to Mar. 31 2021. With the addition of approximately 5,000 firearms deer tags and about 800 spring turkey tags, total purchases were up by over 45,000 when compared to the same time frame a year ago, according to a recent report issued by the agency. While part of the increase was due to more people looking to ge...

  • Habitat: The Key to Your Hunting Season

    John Bradley|Apr 19, 2021

Each year sportsmen and sportswomen look forward with anticipation to hunting season. Even in spring we wait with hope for the email from Game and Fish notifying that we were drawn for one of the "big three:" once in a lifetime tags for moose, elk, and bighorn sheep. Later we hope that our number gets called for the deer tag in our favorite unit. For most, that excitement drops when they read "your application was not drawn." It's easy to gripe at Game and Fish when our name in the hat doesn't g...
