  • Finally on field

    Nathan Price|Apr 17, 2023

Despite mother nature's best efforts, it appears the SNR Black Sox will have a spring baseball season. According to the Sox' new head coach, Dave Skogen, this spring's baseball season will eventually get started, albeit somewhat late. Though it's not ready just yet, the baseball field in New Rockford seems likely to be among the first ready for baseball, and could be one of the region's only usable fields throughout this spring. "Everything is kind of in a holding pattern," explained Skogen....

  • North Dakota Outdoors: The importance of pollinators

    Doug Leier|Apr 17, 2023

I've always appreciated the complexities of nature, including the connection of individual fish and wildlife species to food, water, space and where they call home. If you hunt upland game, the importance of grassland habitat and pollinators is mutual to game and hunters. Much of the information the North Dakota Game and Fish Department provides on these wildlife/habitat connections relates to species that are hunted, fished and trapped, because hunters, anglers and trappers provide the bulk of...

    Nick Simonson|Apr 17, 2023

A full 30 inches of snow drift lined the banks of the small creek just down the road from the cabin in drifts that clung to and overhung its edges. Under the heating sun of mid-morning, however, they had already begun to add to it from the white extensions dripping meltwater, making perfect circles on the creek’s flowing surface with each droplet. Hoping to grab a photo of the half dozen just-returned mallard ducks that had been milling about in its waters the day before, or the two swans...

  • For the Trees: Sweet syrup to ring in spring

    Mitch Thompson|Apr 17, 2023

"What better way to celebrate the end of winter than enjoying sweet, homemade maple syrup?" Spring can be an exciting time to start getting outside after a long, cold winter in North Dakota. And what better reason than if there is sweet maple syrup as an end result? While we don't have lush forests of sugar maples (Acer saccharum) like our neighbors to the east, we do have a naturally occurring relative with the boxelder (Acer negundo), which is sometimes referred to as the Manitoba maple. The...
