The bids for the New Rockford-Sheyenne (NR-S) School improvement project came in higher than expected, and as a result the district will need to use the maximum amount approved by taxpayers to complete the building renovations as proposed. After the bond was approved, district administrators and building committee members worked with consultant firm CTS Group (CTS) to develop detailed plans and specific...

  • Two NR-S graduates start independent seed and chemical business

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 9, 2018

A vacant farmstead just 3 miles north of New Rockford along U.S. Hwy. 281 has become the home of a start-up seed and chemical operation founded by two NR-S graduates. Taylor Koepplin (2010) and Eric Perleberg (2009) established James River Ag last fall, an effort they say was the product of "just a couple of friends talking." The result is a newly-constructed facility equipped with offices, a warehouse and a bulk soybean treatment plant. "I've wanted to do this for a few years now," said...

Public Works Superintendent Bruce Hirchert reported that an inspector came to assess the city landfill this past month. One of the biggest issues the inspector saw firsthand was that residents were not sorting their loads properly, and items not allowed in the landfill were being...

  • Sen. Heitkamp introduces legislation to improve mail delivery

    Apr 9, 2018

  • Crack sealing on county roads slowed by weather

    Allison Lindgren|Apr 9, 2018

The Eddy County Road Department is still working on sealing cracks on Eddy County’s paved roads, according to Eddy County Road Superintendent Irvin Loe. Although March is usually the best time for crack sealing so the tar sets up quickly, the wind and snow has slowed their progress. They have received some complaints about the tar, but doing it now will help it to set up much faster than if they waited until it was warmer. A complaint was received from a township that had been billed for snow...

  • Talking points: How to talk to teens about depression and suicide

    Rachel Brazil|Apr 9, 2018

Many of us are familiar with depression in some way. Maybe we have experienced it ourselves or perhaps we have seen a loved one struggle with the disease. I have written about tough topics such as suicide and depression before, for the Transcript and in other contexts as well. I choose to write about these topics for two reasons. First, both are part of my life experience. As much as I've tried to deny it, suicide and depression are a part of who I am. Second, these tough topics need to be...

  • Eyes that see the good in things

    Allison Lindgren|Apr 9, 2018

Occasionally, I find myself thinking about Baby Jessica and I wonder what became of her. If you were an adult at the time, you'll remember the Baby Jessica story. I think I was so emotionally tied to it because I had a daughter who was about the same age. I also operated a home daycare at the time. I couldn't imagine the pain that either the parents or the daycare provider were experiencing. Yesterday, I decided to do a little research and thought I'd share my findings with you. I discovered...

  • $15 minimum wage will stir 2018 election

    Lloyd Omdahl|Apr 9, 2018

An initiated measure will be on the ballot this year proposing to move the state minimum hourly wage in three steps from $7.25 to $15 by 2021. Needless to say, the proposal will stir election politics. Controversial? Michael Saltsman of the Employment Policies Institute is already writing against the proposal with op-ed pieces for North Dakota newspapers. The Employment Policies Institute has spent its 25 years of existence fighting all and any wage increases across the country with the...

“The lousy Republicans are supposed to decrease federal spending and get our deficit under control, not blow the budget even more!” “Ah, yes, you speak of the massive $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill President Trump just signed into law. Members of Congress were only given 24 hours to read the 2,232-page monstrosity, which nobody did before voting for it.” “What the heck is an omnibus bill, anyhow?” “It combines 13 separate appropriation bills, which Congress otherwise must...

  • Faking it

    Corey Seymour|Apr 9, 2018

By now, it should be pretty obvious that when Donald Trump calls something “FAKE NEWS!” what he really means is “news that makes me look bad.” But Americans are both believing and spreading “FAKE NEWS!” stories like never before—though, it should be noted, a recent study showed that about 80 percent of false stories supported Trump and his administration. A recent example pulled from Trump’s Twitter, “39 percent of my nominations, including Diplomats to foreign lands, have not...

  • Letter to the Editor- April 9, 2018

    William Ziegler|Apr 9, 2018

Spring weather will be here soon (or maybe not) and dogs will be spending more time outdoors. Several things come to mind after hearing of a scary incident where a big German Shepherd running loose jumped up and bit a small dog being carried by its owner. REMINDER 1) City law requires pets be leashed or kenneled when outside. 2) Being near the edge of town is not being in the country. 3) These laws are to protect the public, others property and ensure the safety and well-being of the pet. Our Police have way more to do than play dogcatcher....
