  • From the archives: Hundreds of Eddy County residents died in 1918 Spanish flu pandemic

    Rachel Brazil|Apr 6, 2020

For many of us, the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent efforts to "flatten the curve" through social distancing is unprecedented. Most of us are taking refuge in comfortable homes with ample supplies and an extensive selection of media-based entertainment. As stressful as it is, it's really not all that bad. If we were facing this same scenario a hundred years prior, things would be very different. In fact, things were very different. In 1918, the Spanish Influenza pandemic coincided with...

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 6, 2020

The Rockford Cafe is eerily quiet these days, with no men shaking dice or women chatting over coffee, attempting to solve all the world's problems. However, the cook is still in the kitchen, sending hot food through the window for customers to pick up. And at the front counter, Tuesday was Tiffany (Richter) Schaefer, the third person in her family at the Rockford Cafe to earn the Employee of the Month award. Tiffany started working at the cafe when she was just 7 years old, a young girl at the...

  • Be aware of Census scams

    Apr 6, 2020

Responses to the census questions may be submitted online, via mail or phone. No genuine census survey or agent can ask for your money, Social Security, credit card or bank account numbers. North Dakota County Auditors are the frontline election administrators for the North Dakota elections. Currently, all auditors share one critical concern - the public safety of voters and poll workers during the June primary. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, Auditors are concerned about being able to execute an election while maintaining the recommendations from the CDC, ND Department of Health and...

  • Letter to the Editor: A simple pleasure...

    Apr 6, 2020

A simple pleasure that I have each spring is to go out to my farm and look for sheds (deer antlers). This year was to be special because of being shut in and was to be a good day for getting some exercise. So I go out to the farm, excited, but after a few minutes of looking, I noticed all kinds of 4-wheeler tracks... you guessed it... the field had already been cleaned of sheds. At first I thought "Had I sold this section of land?" SoIwenttooneofthe seven “No Hunting & No Trespassing” posters, and my name was still on them. So now I figure the...

  • Letter from NYC's COVID-19 front lines

    Corey Seymour|Apr 6, 2020

I’ve been inundated lately with emails and calls and texts from friends and family from far away: Everyone’s been hearing reports about New York City, where I live, being a coronavirus war zone— one where everything’s closed and people are fighting over the few remaining rolls of toilet paper left. And it all reminds me a little bit of a long-ago Tran- script story about my father Jerome and his twin brother, Gerald, when they were stationed in New Guinea during World War II. My father told th...

  • Sermonette: April 6, 2020

Pastor Joe Greiner, Evangelical Free Church|Apr 6, 2020

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25 For years, it has been easy to do as the author says and continue to gather together and encourage one another. Our culture almost shuts down on Sundays, and there are many churches to choose from. Most of the churches utilize the efforts of paid professionals, comfortable church buildings, and plenty of chairs to sit in....

  • We are in this together

    Charlotte Koepplin|Apr 6, 2020

As we find it hard to practice “no close contact” with family, friends and the gen- eral public, we - or I know -it’s hard to concentrate on much else, but this threatening virus. It is very real and a big concern. Morning, noon and night we hear about it from TV, radio, internet and it’s the main topic of phone conversations and texting. It has taken over the usual topic of the weather. I wish we could just wait a minute and things would change. Myself, I try not to dwell on it, but how hard is that? It’s like a nagging toothache that’s not go...

  • Archival Anecdotes: A look into the beyond

    Rachel Brazil|Apr 6, 2020

It was Galileo Gailei who perfected the first microscope. That was in 1609. Many years passed as scientists made improvements and modifications before the microscope offered one of the greatest breakthroughs of the 19th century. In the 1860s, Louis Pasteur pioneered the germ theory, which still predominates modern medicine today. The theory suggests that microorganisms (too small to be seen without the aid of a microscope) can afflict human health with disease. Prior to this discovery, it was...
