  • We the People: Justice Harlan's imperishable dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson

    David Adler|Apr 4, 2022

Justice John Marshall Harlan was the only dissenter from the U.S. Supreme Court's infamous ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson, in 1896, in which the majority invoked the "separate but equal" test to uphold segregation laws. Justice Harlan's immortal dissent became law in the landmark case of Brown v. Bd. Of Education of Topeka, Kan. (1954), in which the court overturned Plessy and held that "separate but equal" was inherently unconstitutional and a violation of the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection...

  • What is a woman?

    Tom Purcell|Apr 4, 2022

I’m glad there’s widespread confusion about what a woman is. I’ve been confused my entire life. In the most basic sense, the difference between a male and a female is that a female has two X chromosomes and a male has an X and a Y chromosome — or, in my experience, a “WHY” chromosome? I was raised an only boy with five sisters. All my sisters ever said to me was: Why did you eat all the graham crackers? Why can’t you stop picking your nose? Why don’t you ever change the toilet...

  • Street Trees: The roots of a strong town

    Seairra Sheppard|Apr 4, 2022

As a kid, I remember going on a mission with the block kids to discover which neighbor had the tallest tree. Given that the village’s population was only 100 people, it didn’t take us long: In less than five minutes, we were able to run from one end of the town to the other. We quickly gallivanted through the streets, looking up at the top of trees trying to judge which one felt taller. We confirmed our tallest tree suspicions when we snuck up onto a neighbor’s roof on the corner of town and saw that the tree in my yard stuck out above...

  • Sermonette: April 4, 2022

    Pastor Joe Greiner|Apr 4, 2022

This last week, I was studying my way through Romans 7 when I came to a very intriguing passage. The passage was Romans 7:14-21. The main theme in this passage is the struggle between the Apostle Paul’s two natures. A part of him is utterly fallen and sinful, and another part of him desires to please God. I found this to be very thought provoking. Most Christians would acknowledge Paul as being a stellar believer. The Apostle Paul writes about living in faith, loving God, and loving people with such passion that it is hard for people today...

  • Dakota Gardener: Watering and waiting

    Carrie Knutson|Apr 4, 2022

If you are reading this article, I hope you have stuck with me and listened to my advice on starting seeds. By now, you may have started a few seeds and your other seeds are waiting patiently in the wings. My oregano and thyme have been seeded, and I am patiently awaiting the first seedlings to emerge. While we are waiting to start more seeds, let’s discuss watering and fertilizing your seedlings. Watering seedlings indoors can be somewhat more complicated than watering plants in the garden or in containers outdoors. Indoors, soil moisture...

  • Our Outdoors: Working with the wind

    Nick Simonson|Apr 4, 2022

“It’d be a great day…if it wasn’t for the wind.” If I had a nickel for every time I heard this, I’d have enough for a season’s worth of bait, but such is spring in the upper Midwest. The jet stream yaws and the days oscillate in turn: gusts from the south, gusts from the north, gusts from the east and then a chance for chilly rain or late season snow. Then it all repeats. Even now, as I write this with bright red lips chapped by the southeasterly breezes that blew in for the first...

  • The Peluso Report: It's Here

    Mike Peluso|Apr 4, 2022

Open water is here in Bismarck and it is here to stay! Ramps on the Missouri River are pushed, the ice is gone, and hopefully the walleyes will begin to filter north. I've only been out twice since returning to Bismarck after guiding on the ice all winter on Devils Lake. There are a few things to note, but the first is that the water is extremely low! This is going to make navigation and launching a tad difficult. Another important thing to remember - especially launching in the early mornings r...
