  • What It Takes: Talking Through Trouble

    Oakley Brazil|Mar 29, 2021

When I first began writing "What it Takes," I was inspired by the simple question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" For me, it was a very confusing question. I mean really? How was I supposed to know? That was when I came up with the idea to interview professionals and learn more about what they do at their jobs. In more than two years of writing, I've learned about photographers, teachers, equine care specialists, and most recently, college students. I have also gained an interest in...

  • N.D. House Update: March 29, 2021

Reps. Bill Devlin and Don Vigesaa|Mar 29, 2021

Last week, members of the North Dakota Legislature received the fiscal forecast for the upcoming months. Although the forecast provides a more upbeat assessment, mainly due to a rise in oil prices, it doesn’t provide the projected increase many were hoping for, as we look ahead. The legislature will need to continue their conservative approach to the budgeting process, as we work to complete the constitutionally required, balanced budget, before we adjourn later in April. The House and Senate Appropriations Committees received the March 2021 R...

  • Legislative Report: March 29, 2021

    Sen. Joan Heckaman|Mar 29, 2021

This was a very busy week in the legislature. Of those budgets, I will serve on the Office of Management and Budget, and the Department of Public Instruction. We also had revenue updates from Moody’s and IHS Markit, which provided much-welcomed news. Both M...

  • Legislature casting eyes on huge Legacy Fund

    Lloyd Omdahl|Mar 29, 2021

After 10 years of waiting for the courage to tackle spending the $8 billion Legacy Fund, the present legislature has blossomed with more ideas than dandelions in an unkempt cemetery. Legislators and committees have been dreaming about the day this fund could be touched to grow North Dakota. It seems that day has arrived. The dialogue went public in January, when Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread started talking about using the fund for investing. Not to be outdone by a member of the executive...

  • Resurrecting Easter

    Jase Graves|Mar 29, 2021

Holidays are a big deal at my house. While raising our three daughters, my wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed Halloween costumes, visits from the Easter Bunny, and Valentine's Day parties - and we even let the kids join in most of the time. Seriously, though, now that our girls are teenagers, some of the holiday magic might be slightly diminished, but we still try our best to get them excited about celebrating, usually by involving cash. I think I inherited my enthusiasm for holidays from my...

  • What's News? It depends on who you ask

    Rich Manieri|Mar 29, 2021

I need someone to tell me what’s happening. Not a tinted version of events, but what’s really happening. I make the request because mainstream (if there is such a thing) news outlets seem to fundamentally disagree about what’s important. On Sunday morning, the top story on the Fox News website, complete with video, was rioting in west coast cities on the anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s death - a dozen or so arrests, vandalism, clashes with police. Sounded like a pretty big deal. In the interest of balance, (if there is such a thing), I went to...

Arthur Henry Wolf 'walked on' from his home in Las Vegas, Nev. on Feb. 14, 2021 after a brief illness. Art's family and many friends mourn his premature passing, but mostly the loss of a cherished husband, brother, uncle, friend, colleague, and mentor. Art was born June 18, 1953 in New Rockford, N.D., and grew up with a perpetual fascination with the world and all the people who inhabit it. He was an anthropologist by training, and a humanist in the classical sense. He lived his life with a...

  • Sermonette: Jesus as the Compassionate Creator

    Alicia Louters|Mar 29, 2021

Think for a minute about your answer to this question – What is the most shameful thing you’ve done? This week I want to revisit a passage I recently studied in my time with the Lord. After spending some significant time in the Old Testament, I realized I had some questions about Jesus that I needed to be answered. This prompted me to study the book of John. Below is somewhat of a long excerpt, but I think every verse is worth the read. Let’s dive into one of Jesus’ first recorded miracles, John 2:1-12. “On the third day a wedding took plac...

  • Archival Anecdotes: Good Clean Fun

    Rachel Brazil|Mar 29, 2021

Some might argue that the most important invention in human history was soap. Indeed, soaps made for fewer infections and greatly improved personal hygiene. Soap also had great potential when it came to marketing. If nothing else, we can assume people liked the idea of cleanliness. From 1827 to 1950, Soapine trading cards made their way across the country. There are several worth noting at the Eddy County Museum- nearly all of them in brilliant color. In 1881, a Boston trade journal published...

  • We the People: Protecting Freedom of Speech

    David Adler|Mar 29, 2021

As we have seen in our recent discussion of tests employed by the U.S. Supreme Court to determine the parameters of speech afforded protection under the First Amendment, the great dilemma confronting our nation occurs when speech appears to incite serious, unlawful conduct. Here’s the problem, in a nutshell. It is a fundamental premise of democracy that citizens should be able to express their political views, particularly criticisms of governmental acts. Yet, society also has the right to protect itself from the commission of crimes. C...
