  • Letter to the Editor: Ethics in Government

    Mar 25, 2019

On March 12 the House and Senate Ethics Committees convened to hear both SB 2148 and House Bill 1521 for the first time since crossover. There was strong testimony before the House Ethics Committee in favor of SB 2148, and not without good reason. SB 2148 in its current form is following not only the letter, but also the spirit of Article XIV, the section of the constitution created by Measure 1. While much of the hearing was a productive discussion between members of both House and Senate Ethics Committees, certain members of the Committee dis...

  • Sermonette: Friendship

    Rev. Kevin Libby|Mar 25, 2019

If anyone knows anything about the military than you know that military families tend to move a lot. My dad was career army and as a result we moved a lot. If I remember correctly, I attended 10 schools in 12 years. After high school I found myself feeling the itch to move every couple of years. I met my wife Charleen at Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, N.D., where we both attended. She was raised on a farm north of Grace City and had only moved once in her life. I used to want to move from place to place because I enjoyed meeting new...

  • History of New Rockford- March 25, 2019

    K.C. Gardner Jr.|Mar 25, 2019

The April 25, 1902, “New Rockford Transcript” carried ads for Prader & Goss, who sold Emerson and Rock Island plows; R.M. Kennedy, Dray and Express Line; and H. Peoples, who was selling Double Disc Drills. Horace Courtemanche offered a reward for the return of his bay mare, three years old, 900 lbs., with a white spot in her forehead; she had strayed from his farm two and a half miles northwest of New Rockford. Much of the spring plowing and dragging had been completed. J.F. Dembiczki had...

  • Dakota Datebook: Who Designed the Quarter? and Farmers' Line

    Mar 25, 2019

Who Designed the Quarter? by Merry Helm March 25, 2019 — On this date in 1996, the United States issued its newly redesigned $100 bill. What does that have to do with North Dakota? Nothing, really. But now that we’re on the topic of money design, we’ll tell you the story of who did or didn’t design the Washington quarter – which does link to North Dakota history. In 1981, the magazine Coin World discussed the history of the quarter and gave credit for its design to John Bernard Flannagan, a painter and sculptor who was born in Fargo...

I’ve heard that palliative care can help him with his pain and discomfort. What can you tell me? Searching Spouse Dear Searching, Palliative care is a very effective service that can help patients relieve the symptoms and stress that often comes with serious illness. But unfortunately, most people don’t know about it,...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Make kindness the norm, not the exception

    Brook Jones|Mar 25, 2019

Guest feature: Brooke Jones, Vice President, The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation After recently celebrating my seven year anniversary at The Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Foundation, I reflected back on my initial interview for the job. I remember being asked, “How do you think we can change the world?” Without even thinking about it, I responded, “We have to make kindness the norm, not the exception.” That has been my personal mission and the mission of RAK for a long time. Humans spend so much time and energy focusing on the...

Licenses can also be purchased...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: 2019 spring conservation order

    Doug Leier|Mar 25, 2019

The first official bird hunting season opener of 2019 took place in late February, but it’s highly unlikely anyone has yet seen, let along hunted, a snow goose flying over North Dakota’s cold, snow-covered landscape. I can recall a few years ago that reports of scout flocks of snow geese were spotted in mid-February even before the season opened, but those birds met with snow and wind and were soon nowhere to be found, likely blowing back south for a few more weeks. The point is, in the two...
