  • The Sullivan decision: Affirming the right to criticize government

    David Adler|Feb 28, 2022

For a nation grounded on the republican values of self-government and freedom of expression, both of which are served and constitutionally fortified by freedom of the press, the Supreme Court's ruling in the landmark case of New York Times v. Sullivan (1964) provided all the reassurance that even the most demanding citizens could seek. The "central meaning" of the First Amendment, Justice William Brennan declared in his opinion for a unanimous court, is the right to criticize government and...

    Tom Purcell|Feb 28, 2022

Three-day weekends sound good to me. According to Business Insider, a movement is afoot for companies to offer employees four-day work weeks — 10 hours a day over four days, rather than eight hours over five days — so they may enjoy three-day weekends. More employers say that a four-day work week will help them retain and attract employees who, during COVID, reported “working longer, taking fewer breaks, and signing on at all hours of the day and night.” COVID exposed millions of new...

  • Winter is planning season

    Amy Wobbema|Feb 28, 2022

Amid all this wonderful wintery weather we’ve been experiencing, it may appear that no work is getting done. To the contrary, winter is what I refer to as “planning season.” Whether we gaze out the window from our warm offices or hunker down by the fireplace in our homes, our wheels are turning thinking about the months ahead. What kind of a year will we have? When and where will we travel? How many weddings and graduations are on the calendar? Do we have proper attire for them all? Here a...

  • Sermonette: Feb. 28, 2022

    Pastor Mindy Meier|Feb 28, 2022

Let’s take a moment to whine about the weather. It’s dreary, always windy, bitter cold. Our vitamin D levels are down and we can feel it. Sometimes we hear, “well, if you’re dressed right, you can enjoy the outdoors in any weather.” Right. Unless you live here. We can find a lot to whine about these days. And they are real complaints. Life is difficult, we’re polarized, we’re busy, we’re distracted. All the whining reminds me of a familiar story about Jesus: The Wedding at Cana, a.k.a. when Jesus turns water into wine. We want...

  • Living on Purpose: Those who have an ear let them hear

    Billy Holland|Feb 28, 2022

One of the greatest mysteries is the perplexing relationship between God and humans. I cannot think of a more glorious yet frustrating subject. Especially when it comes to people trying to find answers when all they have is questions. I’ve counseled and given psychological first aid to those who have gone through a traumatic crisis and I’ve listened to people in hospital waiting rooms repeat that age-old question, “Why is this happening?” They cry and beg, but many times they cannot...

  • Tree Talk: Spring fever

    Gerri Makay|Feb 28, 2022

How are you feeling? This week a local television news reporter proclaimed February 2022 as “the longest shortest month, ever!” It’s enough to make even the toughest North Dakotan sick. Sick with cabin fever. Hang on – with a little luck and cooperation from Mother Nature, we can soon trade cabin fever for Spring Fever. Warm temperatures (yes, a relative term) and melting snow trigger the malady. Spring is “just around the corner” and we should plan for getting back into the garden. NDSU Extension has prepared the 2022 round of...
